Kyle Johnston held the Huskies hitless through 5.1 innings but the Longhorns’ ninth-inning rally came up short.
AUSTIN, Texas—Despite 5.1 hitless innings from junior right-handed pitcher Kyle Johnston, Texas Baseball (4-3) fell, 2-1, to visiting UConn (4-2) on Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Longhorns threated in the first inning off of UConn starter Wills Montgomerie, but Texas was unable to convert the bases loaded opportunity and the two sides traded zeroes for the first five frames.
With one out in the sixth, Huskies shortstop Anthony Prato broke up Johnston's no-no bid with a bunt single. Zac Susi then followed with a single through the left side before right fielder Isaac Feldstein hit a two-run double to give the Huskies the lead.
Texas did not muster much offense throughout the game, striking out 17 times on the day, 13 of which came at the hands of Montgomerie.
In the ninth and trailing by two, the Longhorns rallied. Kacy Clemens drew a walk to open the frame and, after a strikeout, Bret Boswell reached on a free pass of his own. With runners on first and second, Travis Jones singled up the middle to plate the Longhorns' first run of the ballgame. With runners on the corners and just one out, however, the Longhorns could not complete the comeback and dropped the contest by a 2-1 final.
Johnston (1-1) finished the day with seven innings of two-run ball while sophomore right-hander Beau Ridgeway tossed a pair of scoreless frames.
The Longhorns and Huskies return to UFCU Disch-Falk Field for the rubber match on Sunday at noon.
