02.07.2017 | Women's Golf
Three Longhorns finished in the top 15 to kick off the spring season.
ORLANDO, Fla. – Junior Sophia Schubert fired a 3-under 69 to tie for seventh and lead No. 19 Texas Women's Golf to a tie for third place at the UCF Challenge on Tuesday.
Schubert followed rounds of 72 and 69 with a third-round 69 to finish 6-under par for her second top-10 finish this season.
She made five birdies on the third round, including four on the back nine and back-to-back birdies on holes 14 and 15.
Senior Haley Mills also fired a 3-under 69, climbing 18 spots to tie for 15th with freshman Emilee Hoffman.
Mills made six birdies on the day, following rounds of 74 and 70 to finish the tournament 3-under par. Hoffman's rounds of 69-72-72 also put her at 3-under par after three rounds.
Senior Julia Beck climbed 12 spots on the third day with her third-round 72 to tie for 45th, while sophomore Maddie Luitwieler finished 5-over par in a tie for 50th.
As a team, the Longhorns finished four strokes behind winner Clemson with an 854, their second-lowest 54-hole total in program history. Mississippi State's Chieh Jessica Peng earned medalist honors at 11-under par.
Texas will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 19 for the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate at the English Turn Golf and Country Club.
Post-Tournament Comments
Head Coach Ryan Murphy
On the tournament: It was a solid week. We had an outside chance today to get it done … we came close. I'm definitely happy that we were in contention again. That has been the case with this team all season. The effort was definitely there today.
On the individual performances: Individually, Sophia played well from start to finish. I am proud of her effort this week.
Also, it was another good week for Emilee. Although she isn't satisfied with her finish, she has played great for us all season long.
I'm particularly happy with Haley's final two rounds this week. We needed her to step up after a slow start and she did. I am very proud of her for that fight back.
On the overall performance: Overall, it was a good team effort. Maddie gave us a couple of good rounds and Julia gave us a good one today. All five contributed and I'm always happy when that is the case.
