AUSTIN, Texas—Texas Baseball held off visiting UT Arlington on Tuesday night in the Longhorns' 4-1 defeat of the Mavericks at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Longhorns (31-16) got on the board early in the first frame off UTA starter Matt Michalski (0-2). After Kody Clemens reached on a single, Travis Jones doubled and the throw in from the right fielder got away to allow Clemens to score and put Texas up 1-0.
The Mavericks (26-18) answered back in the top half of the second with a run off Kyle Johnston, who would exit after 2.1 innings of work. Johnston left in the third with the bases loaded before Nick Kennedy (7-0) entered and escaped the jam with a double play ball.
In the bottom half of the third, the Longhorns added a pair of runs thanks to a Kacy Clemens sac fly and a Ryan Reynolds RBI double. In the fifth, Travis Jones hit his fourth homer of the season to push the Texas lead to 4-1.
Kennedy turned in 3.2 innings of work for the win before Tyler Schimpf added a pair of scoreless innings. Beau Ridgeway (11) entered in the ninth and retired the Mavericks in order on just five pitches for the save.
The Longhorns defense turned a season-high four double plays on the day, giving them 52 for the season, tied for most in the nation.
Texas returns to Big 12 Conference action this weekend as it heads to TCU for a three-game series.
