LONDON – Lifetime Longhorn Michelle Carter fought the rain and the best throwers in the world on her way to a bronze medal at the IAAF World Championships on Wednesday. The 2016 Olympic gold medalist was finished third in the women's shot put and was unable to make it three straight major championship victories.
Carter posted her best throw in Round 3 at 19.14 meters (62-9.50) and found herself in second place after each of the first five rounds of throws on Wednesday in the rainy, cold conditions at London Stadium.
She trailed only China's Lijiao Gong until the final round when Hungary's Anita Marton moved ahead of Carter at 19.49m. With her final throw coming Carter was unable to move back ahead of Marton or take the lead with a distance of 18.97m on her last throw.
This is Carter's second bronze medal at the IAAF World Championships, also finishing third in 2015 in Beijing. She claimed gold at the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships and backed that up with gold at the 2016 Olympic Games.
Her bronze on Wednesday is the first medal won by a Longhorn at the world championships this year. Texas still has opportunities for more medals from current and former student-athletes with five events still on the slate for Longhorns.
No Longhorns are set to compete on Thursday but will hit the track next on Friday when Trey Hardee begins the decathlon for Team USA and 2017 Big 12 champ and All-American Rushelle Burton runs the 100 meter hurdles for Jamaica.
