The twins Turati post straight-sets singles wins over ranked opponents Friday in Palm Springs.
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Headed by ranked wins from Texas twin sophomores Anna and Bianca Turati, the Longhorns swept their opening singles matches and added a doubles win Friday at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic.
The 87th-ranked Anna Turati picked up a top-25 win and upset Stanford's 22nd-ranked Emily Arbuthnott, 6-4, 7-6. The 10th-ranked Bianca Turati followed suit and made short work of UCLA's Alaina Miller, as she dealt the Bruin a 6-1, 6-1 defeat.
Freshman Fernanda Labraña made her collegiate debut just days after arriving in Austin from her native Chile. Labraña dropped her first set in a tiebreaker to UCLA's Kristin Wiley before rallying to a 6-7 (8), 6-3, 6-3 win.
Freshman Bojana Markovic made it a clean sweep for Texas in singles with her 6-1, 6-2 win over UCLA's Sophie Bendetti. She added an 8-5 win alongside Bianca Turati in doubles over Memphis' Laura Bente and Anki Wind. Play continues Saturday in Palm Springs.
At the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships in Las Vegas, sophomore Petra Granic dropped her opening-round match but returned to defeat Oklahoma State's Marina Guinart in consolation action. Granic plus freshman Marta Perez-Mur and senior Dani Wagland continue competition on Saturday in Las Vegas.

POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Howard Joffe
On day one at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic
Given the layoff for winter break as well as the addition of Fernanda Labraña only 48 hours ago, today was a very encouraging start for the Longhorns. They played very well at times and at others a little scratchy, but everyone competed ferociously all day. That ought to allow us to shake off any holiday rust pretty soon. The play was highlighted by Anna Turati's win over Stanford's brilliant sophomore, Emily Arbuthnott. Fernanda Labraña fought like crazy to win her debut over a strong UCLA player. Bojana Markovic and Bianca Turati enjoyed comfortable wins but competed well. Tomorrow will give us another opportunity to play our way to sharp tennis in preparation for our first match next week."
