COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas Track & Field came away with a number of impressive performances on Saturday at the Texas A&M Quadrangular with the most impressive perhaps coming from a freshman.
Micaiah Harris blazed around the track to win the men's 200 meters with a time of 20.87 seconds. That ranks him third in school history and puts him at No. 6 in the NCAA this season. Harris came to Texas out of Virginia as one of the top sprinters in the nation in high school last year.
Along with the effort from Harris, the men's team combined to win a total of nine events at the A&M Quadrangular. That was not enough to get the overall win with the Aggies just edging the Longhorns in the men's team scoring 164-160.5. It marked the closest finish in the meet's history. Baylor took third place and Arizona State finished fourth in the team standings. A&M also got the women's team with 150 points and Texas was second with 130. Baylor took third with Arizona State finishing fourth. The Texas women had two wins but tallied an impressive 18 personal records on the day.
Another wow moment came for the men with junior hurdler John Burt taking the victory in 7.82 seconds. His time puts him in the top 10 this year in the NCAA and moves to fifth in school history. Burt entered the meet with a personal best time of 8.06 seconds. He ran 8.02 in the prelims on Saturday before leaving the field behind in 7.82.
Texas swept the men's horizontal jumps with Steffin McCarter and O'Brien Wasome showing why they finished third at NCAA Championships last year. McCarter registered a new personal best mark of 7.85 meters (25-9.25) to hold the No. 2 spot in the NCAA this season. He also moves into fourth in school history. Wasome won the triple jump with a mark of 16.00m (52-6.00) in his season debut in the event.
The men's squad scored in bunches in the distance events. The trio of Sam Worley, Alex Rogers and John Rice made it a clean sweep for the Longhorns winning all three distance events on the day.
Worley won the 800m in 1:50.62 in his collegiate debut. Rogers claimed first in the mile in 4:07.93. Rice won the 3,000 with his time of 8:18.21 and celebrated by doing the Macarena.
No dance moves were seen in the throwing ring, but senior Alan Zapalac won his third meet of the year in the weight throw. He had a meet record distance of 21.65m (71-0.50). Freshman Tripp Piperi also had a meet record for the men in the shot put. He came up just shy of his best mark from last week with a toss of 19.30m (63-4.00).
The women's squad got wins in the pole vault and hurdles.
Sophomore Rushelle Burton made her season debut and clocked in at 8.16 to win the 60m hurdles. She led a charge of Longhorns to score big. Texas finished 1-2-3-4 with Ariel Jones, Pedrya Seymour and Mariam Abdul-Rashid following Burton.
Kally Long won the women's pole vault to claim first in back-to-back weeks. She cleared 4.07m (13-4.25).
In the women's weight throw, Lauryn Caldwell officially put the school record on notice. She finished in third place but registered a mark of 18.43m (60-5.75), just 13 centimeters shy of the record. Elena Bruckner also had a good showing with a new personal best of 17.93m (58-10.00) as she, too, inches closer to the school record.
Texas will head to Lubbock next week for the Texas Tech Invitational. The two-day meet will also feature a pentathlon and heptathlon, which the Longhorns are slated to compete in as well. The Longhorns will face a number of teams from across the state along with the Oklahoma Sooners.
