Four from Women’s Tennis advance to singles quarterfinals at ITA Texas Regionals

Labraña, Poluta, Markovic and Turati each record two wins on Friday to move on to Saturday’s quarterfinals.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The University of Texas women's tennis team advanced four players to the singles quarterfinals at the ITA Texas Regional Championships at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. Senior Katie Poluta, junior Anna Turati and sophomores Fernanda Labraña and Bojana Markovic each registered a pair of wins on Friday to move on to Saturday's quarterfinal round.
In singles action on Friday, top-seed Turati defeated Incarnate Word's Brandelyn Fulgenzi (6-0, 6-1) in the Round of 32 before topping North Texas' Maria Kononova (6-1, 7-5) in the Round of 16. No. 7 seed Labraña downed Camille Townsend of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (6-1, 6-3) in the Round of 32 before topping Texas A&M's Riley McQuaid (6-1, 6-3) in the Round of 16.
Poluta earned a 7-5, 6-1 win in the Round of 32 against UTA's Almudena Boza before topping Ndindi Ndunda of Houston (6-2, 6-1) in the Round of 16. No. 6 seed Markovic defeated Dominique Ibarra of UT Rio Grande Valley (6-4, 4-6, 1-0 [10-7]) in the Round of 32 before topping Texas Tech's Olivia Peet (6-1, 6-2) in the Round of 16. Poluta and Markovic will face each other in quarterfinal action on Saturday.
No. 2 seed junior Petra Granic dropped a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) decision to Minying Liang of North Texas in the Round of 32. No. 4 seed freshman Tijana Spasojevic fell 6-3, 6-2 to SMU's Sarai Monarrez Yesaki in the Round of 32.
Both remaining UT doubles teams were eliminated from the tournament in Friday morning's Round of 16 action. The top seed in the doubles draw, Granic and Markovic dropped a 6-3 decision to North Texas' duo of Alexandra Heczey and Ivana Babic. Poluta and Labraña, the No. 4 seed, fell 6-4 to Riley McQuaid and Iulia Ivascu of Texas A&M.
Quarterfinal action in singles is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. Central on Saturday, Oct. 20. Singles semifinals are slated for Sunday, Oct. 21 at 9:30 a.m. Central, while the championship match is set for 9:30 a.m. Central on Monday, Oct. 22. All matches will be held on Texas A&M's campus at the Mitchell Tennis Center. Admission to the event is free.
