Anna Turati wins singles title at ITA Texas Regionals

UT junior defeated sophomore Bojana Markovic on Monday in all-Texas championship match.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas — In an all-Longhorns final, University of Texas junior Anna Turati defeated sophomore Bojana Markovic 6-1, 6-0 on Monday morning to claim the singles title at the ITA Texas Regional Championships at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
Turati, the top seed in the tourney, completed an impressive run to the championship. After a first-round bye, she won six consecutive matches without dropping a set. In fact, the UT junior lost only 19 total games in her six victories during the ITA Texas Regionals.
"I'm super excited to win the title at the Regionals," Turati said. "I'm even more proud of our entire team and our performance here. Texas dominated the tournament. I played in the final against Bojana (Markovic). We had three players in the semifinals, so I'm very proud of the group."
This marked the second straight year that a pair of Longhorns competed for the singles championship at the ITA Texas Regionals. Last season, Bianca Turati topped Petra Granic in the final.
UT also produced the individual singles champion at the ITA Texas Regional for the third time in the last four years. Breaunna Addison captured the singles title in 2015, and Bianca Turati claimed the championship in 2017.
"We definitely enjoyed great success in College Station," said Texas head coach Howard Joffe. "It was a good week and weekend for the Longhorns. We were well-represented in the later stages of the tournament with four of the eight quarterfinalists and three of the four semifinalists. Today, of course, was an all-Texas affair with Anna Turati winning the title against Bojana Markovic."
"Definitely that speaks to the depth and skill of our team," Joffe continued. "As a coach, that's very exciting. Our ladies do understand we still have lots of work and improvement to do as we move forward with preparations for the spring. But it is a good time to sit back, reflect and celebrate the great work that our ladies have put in and the results that they've been rewarded with."
