Women’s Tennis posts three wins on Friday at River Oaks Invitational

Poluta and Spasojevic record singles victories, while doubles tandem of Poluta/Labraña split pair of matches on opening day of tournament.

HOUSTON, Texas — The University of Texas women's tennis team recorded a total of three victories during Friday's opening day of competition in the River Oaks Country Club Fall College Invitational at River Oaks Country Club. Senior Katie Poluta and freshman Tijana Spasojevic each claimed straight-set wins in singles, and Poluta teamed with sophomore Fernanda Labraña to split a pair of doubles matches.

Tournament action began Friday with each doubles team playing two matches. Poluta and Labraña dropped a 6-4 decision to North Carolina State's Bianca Moldovan and Liz Norman, before responding with a 7-6 (7-3) victory in their second effort of the day against Vivienne Kulicke and Sarai Monarrez Yesaki of SMU.

Junior Petra Granic and Spasojevic opened play with a 6-3 loss to Houston's Sophie Gerits and Phonexay Chitdara. Granic withdrew from the tourney, and UT's pair defaulted in its second match of the day against Rice's Priya Niezgoda and Linda Huang.

In singles action on Friday, Poluta claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory against SMU's Nicole Petchey, while Spasojevic earned a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 win against Tiffany Hollebeck of SMU. Labraña concluded play with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) loss to No. 59 Adrian Reami of North Carolina State.

The tournament consists of players from five teams (Texas, Houston, SMU, Rice and North Carolina State) competing in singles and doubles flights. Play continues on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 11:30 a.m. Central with one doubles match followed by a pair of singles matches. The tournament concludes on Sunday, Oct. 28. All matches will be held at River Oaks Country Club.
