Senior midfielder Kayra Dollas scored her first career match-winning goal at 86:56 to lead UT to victory
AMES, Iowa – On a cold and rainy Friday afternoon at the Cyclone Sports Complex that included a 43-minute lightning delay, No. 13 Texas soccer (10-1-2, 2-1-1 Big 12 Conference) got an 87th minute goal from senior midfielder Kayra Dollas to fight off Iowa State and climb back into the win column, 2-1.
The Longhorns out-shot the Cyclones in the match by a 20-7 count, led 7-2 in shots on goal and managed a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks.
Junior forward Cyera Hintzen, the Big 12's leading scorer entering Friday, registered her 10th goal of the year at 14:06 and dished her fifth assist for three total points in the contest. For Dollas, her goal marked her first of the season as well as the first match-winning score of the Orange, Calif., native's career. Senior forward Alexa Adams was credited with her fifth assist of 2018 via the final pass on Dollas' winning goal.
Texas nearly jumped to an early lead off a free kick during the third minute of play. Standing a few yards past midfield in UT's offensive end, senior defender Atu Mshana delivered a long feed towards the left post. Dollas out-jumped her marker and headed a ball into the right edge of the net, but the official had his flag up for offside to negate the goal.
Back at the other end, Iowa State forced a save as Kassi Ginther drove a shot on frame that was stopped by UT junior keeper Nicole Curry.
With Texas buzzing around the offensive third, senior defender Chelsea Surpris and Adams (two shots) forced a trio of stops from ISU's net minder from the 10th through the 14th minutes.
Finally, after controlling the early going, Hintzen provided a moment of personal brilliance to give the Longhorns the lead by curling a shot from 30 yards out into the upper right 90 to make it 1-0.
The Burnt Orange & White seemed to let down briefly following their opening goal as Iowa State raced down off the kick-off with Ginther eventually scoring just 57 seconds later off a cross from the left wing to dead-lock things at 1-1.
The tying goal seemed to boost the Cyclones confidence even more as ISU nearly grabbed the lead at 21:45 as a Kasey Medelberg shot was saved off the line at the right post by UT's Mshana.
The Longhorns eventually settled back into the match with Adams having shots blocked and go high of frame at 25:44 and 27:42, respectively.
During the 37th minute, Texas nearly re-took the lead on the scoreboard. Senior midfielder Katie Glenn started the play with a pass to sophomore midfielder Haley Berg standing outside the top of the 18. The Celina, Texas, product delivered a perfect through ball up the middle to Hintzen inside the box. With an Iowa State defender attempting to recover, Hintzen tried locating the left side of the net from 12 yards out only to have her shot rattle off the left post before being cleared.
Just 54 seconds later, the head official signaled to stop play for lightning in the local Ames area as the teams retreated to their respective locker rooms for the 43-minute delay.
Out of an abbreviated halftime break, Texas took control offensively right from the start. UT's best early chance came during the 56th minute as Hintzen tried to bend a 14-yard shot from the right side of the 18 inside the left post. The Garland, Texas, native's effort was parried away on a dive by ISU's keeper, and a follow-up attempt off the rebound by Adams was corralled by the netminder near the left end line.
Off a corner in the 61st minute, Iowa State's Kasey Opfer managed to out-leap a crowd about eight yards out, but her header ventured over the crossbar.
Texas continued to fire away as Surpris and freshman midfielder Carlee Allen had consecutive shots from outside the top of the box blocked at 69:58 and 70:03, respectively.
With both teams creating opportunities and time beginning to run short, it was Texas that finally struck at 86:56. From the right side of the 18, Adams played a ball up to Dollas just outside the top of the box. After taking a dribble to her right, Dollas bent a shot into the upper left 90 for a stunning, 2-1 lead.
Faced with little time to locate an equalizer, Iowa State's Medelberg managed to have a shot blocked at 88:43, but that was it as the Longhorns finished off the one-goal victory.
