The Mountaineers got a key penalty kick call to tie the match at the 76:37 mark
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Two goals over a span of 3:09 late in the second half helped No. 16 West Virginia (8-3-3, 4-1-0 Big 12 Conference) rally past No. 13 Texas soccer (10-2-2, 2-2-1 Big 12 Conference) on a hot and humid Sunday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Stadium, 2-1.
Sophomore midfielder/forward Haley Berg granted the Longhorns an early lead by scoring her fourth goal of the season at 18:06. WVU's late rally came on a pair of goals from defender Bianca St. Georges over a stretch of 3:09 of match time, including a tying penalty kick at 76:37.
Junior forward Cyera Hintzen was credited with her sixth assist of the season on Berg's goal to join senior midfielder Katie Glenn in tying for the Big 12 lead in the category.
For the Burnt Orange & White, junior goalkeeper Nicole Curry made five saves between the pipes to back UT's defensive effort.
Curry was forced into quick action for the Longhorns during the third minute as the net minder made a terrific diving save to her left on a point-blank Hannah Abraham shot before UT cleared its lines.
Back at the other end, Hintzen found some space while moving to her left towards the top of the 18-yard box and fired a shot that went wide right at 5:43.
With lots of WVU pressure, the Mountaineers came close to scoring again at 15:35 as forward Sh'Nia Gordon bent an effort from 20 yards out that ventured just over the upper left 90 for a goal kick.
Against the run of play, Texas jumped to the lead at the 18:06 mark. Senior midfielder Kayra Dollas started things by corralling a ball near midfield and playing ahead to Hintzen. The Garland, Texas, native dribbled upfield and delivered a through ball inside the 18. Berg ran onto it, cut quickly to her left and fired a shot that deflected off a WVU defender before just scraping inside the left post for a 1-0 advantage.
West Virginia continued to press while trying to find an equalizer as the Mountaineers just missed wide left of the post in the 29th minute.
Curry was forced back into action at 36:26 as the Dallas, Texas, product made another tremendous diving stop to parry a Jade Gentile shot out of danger.
Over the remainder of the opening half, Texas managed better spells of possession as the Longhorns headed to the break with a one-goal lead.
Out of the locker room, Hintzen took off on an almost immediate run up the left wing, but her eventual cross into the middle was cleared away by West Virginia.
Hintzen was at it again during the 50th minute as another cross from the left wing ventured just a foot or two over the head of a wide-open leaping senior forward Alexa Adams.
The Mountaineers appeared to have found the equalizer in the 51st minute as forward Sh'Nia Gordon received a ball behind Texas' back line and scored from a sharp right angle. The official on the far side had the flag up for offside, however, negating the WVU goal.
Right back the other way at 51:15, Berg received a pass inside the 18 with some space, turned quickly and fired from 14 yards out only to have her shot travel just wide right.
UT's stronger play continued at 56:11 as another counter saw Hintzen feed a pass ahead up the left wing. Adams received the pass and shot from a tough angle from nine yards out only to have the ball strike the side netting.
The Mountaineers turned the momentum back in their favor over the next stretch with consecutive 60th minute corners resulting in a wide Jordan Brewster header.
The equalizer finally came as a result of a foul call against the Longhorns as the head official signaled for a PK on an apparent Texas hand ball just inside the 18. St. Georges stepped to the spot and beat Curry to the right side to tie the match at 1-1.
It took just 3:09 for WVU to grab the advantage as St. Georges managed to strike pay dirt on a 20-plus yard shot from outside the top of the box.
Suddenly facing a deficit, the Longhorns continued to battle down the stretch as Adams was high on an effort at 80:46, but WVU managed to possess and successfully run out the clock on the 2-1 win.
