WACO, Texas — The University of Texas women's tennis team recorded eight victories during Friday's opening day of competition at Hurd Tennis Center in the H-E-B Invitational. Senior Katie Poluta and sophomore Fernanda Labraña each posted a pair of singles wins to advance to Saturday's quarterfinal round, while the duo teamed up for two victories to move on to the doubles semifinals.

Poluta and Labraña opened the day in the 16-team doubles field with a 6-1 win against Laura Cabrera and Kylee Kato of UTSA. Later in the afternoon, the Texas duo returned to defeat Sam Houston State's tandem of Malou Goes and Rosalie Gerritsen by a 6-1 count.

Poluta registered a 6-2, 6-1 win against UTSA's Charleen Tiwari in the opening round of the 32-player singles bracket. She later topped Sam Houston State's Sahaja Yamalapalli 6-2, 6-2 to advance to Saturday's quarterfinal round.

Labraña tallied a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Lusine Chobanyan of Sam Houston State in the opening round of singles. She later advanced to the quarterfinals by virtue of a default by Nidhi Surapaneni of North Texas.

Sophomore Marta Perez-Mur won her opening singles match against Minying Liang of North Texas 6-1, 6-3. She then fell to Tyler Junior College's Maria Genovese 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) in the Round of 16. Perez-Mur paired with Kansas' Julia Deming in doubles to record a 6-3 win in the opening round against Sam Houston State's pair of Yamalapalli and Petra Kaszas. Perez-Mur and Deming later defaulted their quarterfinal match to Genovese and Anna Brogan of Tyler Junior College.

Saturday's action is set to begin at 9 a.m. CT and will be held at the Waco Regional Tennis Center at 900 Lake Shore Drive.
