UT freshman defender Emma Regan subbed on at halftime during Team Canada’s 12-0 rout of Cuba
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas soccer freshman defender Emma Regan made her first career appearance for the Canadian Women's Senior National Team late Monday night by subbing on at halftime of Canada's 12-0 rout of Cuba that helped the squad move to the top of Group B at the CONCACAF Women's Championship.
Fellow Texas freshman Julia Grosso also earned her seventh career cap in the contest by starting in the midfield as part of Canada's 4-3-3 formation.
The Canadians dominated Cuba to the tune of a 46-1 shot advantage, including 17-0 in shots on goal, and scored 12 times while also striking the woodwork on a pair of occasions.
Grosso and Regan have been away from the Forty Acres with the Canadian Women's Senior National Team since being called up for the CONCACAF Women's Championship Preliminary Camp back on Sept. 19. As a result, the duo has missed all five of Texas' Big 12 matches against Baylor, No. 13 Oklahoma State, TCU, Iowa State and No. 16 West Virginia and could remain out of action with the Longhorns through October 17 if Canada reaches the CONCACAF Women's Championship Final.
Texas is one of just three NCAA Division I programs that lost two players during the event alongside Florida State and UCLA. Florida, Rutgers, Tennessee, Cornell, UNC Wilmington and Santa Clara have also had a single player miss time with various countries for the CONCACAF Women's Championship.
The event serves as the official qualification tournament for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France. The top three squads at the CONCACAF Women's Championship will receive an automatic bid to the prestigious event, while the fourth-place squad will advance to a playoff against Argentina from CONMEBOL for a World Cup bid.
