The Longhorns improved to a perfect 6-0 during their 2018 fall campaign
AUSTIN, Texas – Make it a perfect 6-0 in fall action for Texas softball as the Longhorns swept a Wednesday doubleheader at Red & Charline McCombs Field from Galveston College (6-0) and defending NJCAA national champion Temple College (5-3).
Highlighting the UT offense was junior catcher Taylor Ellsworth, who combined to go 4-for-6 with four RBIs during the twinbill. Junior outfielder Tuesday DerMargosian was 4-for-5 with two walks and two steals, while junior first baseman Kaitlyn Washington went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
In the circle, four Texas pitchers combined to register 24 strikeouts over 14 innings of work, while allowing eight total hits and just one earned run.
Game One vs. Galveston College
In the 6-0 triumph over Galveston College, UT's offense banged out 11 hits led by Washington's 2-for-2 effort with two RBIs. Senior right fielder Bekah Alcozer was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, DerMargosian and sophomore second baseman Janae Jefferson each went 2-for-3, while both junior shortstop Kaitlyn Slack and Ellsworth posted 1-for-3 performances with single RBIs.
Sophomore pitchers Ariana Adams (winning pitcher, 4 IP, three hits, nine K's) and Chloe Romero (3 IP, one hit, three K's) combined for the Burnt Orange & White on a four-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts.
Following a quick 1-2-3 top of the first with two strikeouts by Adams, the Texas offense got going immediately as DerMargosian and Jefferson registered back-to-back singles to open UT's first at-bat. With the bags packed on a one-out Hathaway walk, Slack chopped a RBI groundout to third, and Washington soon followed with a two-RBI single up the middle to boost the Horns to a quick 3-0 advantage.
Galveston College tried answering right back in the top of the second, sandwiching a pair of singles around Adams' third K of the night. That's all the Whitecaps would get in the frame, however, as a groundout and another strikeout left two stranded.
Adams continued to exert her influence from the circle, striking out two in the third and the side in the fourth to improve her strikeout total to nine.
After reliever Romero struck out the side during the top of the fifth, the Longhorns added three more in the bottom half as singles from DerMargosian, Jefferson, Ellsworth and Slack combined to make it 6-0.
The Whitecaps got a leadoff single to open the top of the sixth, but that was it as a beautiful 6-4-3 double play from Slack to Jefferson to Washington ended the frame.
From there, Romero rolled through GC's line-up in order in the seventh as Texas finalized a 6-0 victory.
Game Two vs. Temple College
The Longhorns were led offensively by Ellsworth as the Georgetown, Texas, native went 3-for-3 with a walk, a steal and three RBIs. DerMargosian was 2-for-2 with two walks and a pair of steals, while Hathaway walked and knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly.
Senior starter Brooke Bolinger struck out nine over four innings of one-hit work while allowing one run. In relief, freshman Shea O'Leary tossed the final three frames, permitting two unearned runs on three hits with three K's.
With Bolinger having struck out the Temple College side in the top of the first, DerMargosian got the Longhorns off to the right start in the bottom half with a leadoff walk. After an Ellsworth single to shallow left and a stolen base, Hathaway stepped to the dish and lifted a sac fly to center for a 1-0 lead.
UT's senior pitcher continued to dominate from the circle, striking out the first nine batters she faced in the contest.
In the bottom of the third, a one-out DerMargosian walk and stolen base, a wild pitch, an Ellsworth free pass and a DerMargosian/Janna Roberts double steal made it 2-0.
Temple College finally managed its first base runners in the top of the fourth as three Bolinger walks loaded the bases with two retired. A high chopper to second was beaten out for an RBI single, but another runner was thrown out at the plate to end the threat with UT still in front, 2-1.
O'Leary entered the contest in relief starting the fifth inning and quickly rolled through the Temple College line-up in order with a K.
DerMargosian got another UT attack underway by drawing a walk starting the bottom of the fifth. Following a perfect sacrifice bunt by Jefferson, Ellsworth stepped to the dish and launched a RBI single to right center for a 3-1 lead.
A pair of singles got Temple College in serious business with two outs in the top of the seventh against O'Leary. An infield miscue that should have ended the game cut the Texas lead to just 3-2. A hit batter soon loaded the bases, and a single through the left side of the infield deadlocked the count with the bags still packed. Fortunately, a TC groundout to short concluded the frame with the teams tied at 3-3.
Freshman pinch hitter Janna Roberts set the tone by drawing a huge leadoff walk for the Longhorns in the bottom of the seventh. From there, a perfect DerMargosian bunt single, a throwing error and a clutch two-run Ellsworth single finalized the UT advantage at 5-3.
