Softball drops a 6-2 decision to Colorado State
02.10.2018 | Softball
Freshman second baseman Janae Jefferson continued her hot start by going 2-for-3 with two RBIs
AUSTIN, Texas – On a blustery and cold Saturday afternoon at Red & Charline McCombs Field, Colorado State (4-0) broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the fourth and three more on a seventh-inning HR to hand Texas softball (2-1) its first loss of the season, 6-2.
UT freshman second baseman Janae Jefferson continued her impressive debut weekend by going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, raising her season totals to .625 overall (5-for-8) with three extra-base hits and a team-leading five RBIs. Sophomore center fielder Tuesday DerMargosian (1-for-3), senior catcher Randel Leahy (1-for-3, run) and junior right fielder Bekah Alcozer (1-for-3, run) all contributed single hits during the defeat.
In the circle for the Horns, freshman Chloe Romero started and suffered the loss in her initial collegiate appearance, allowing three earned runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts over 4.0 innings of work.
After Texas missed a golden chance to grab an early lead by leaving Jefferson and sophomore designated player Taylor Ellsworth stranded in the first, Colorado State immediately struck pay dirt during the top of the second. Designated player Lauren Buchanan got the outburst started off Romero by launching a double to right center. Following a passed ball and a walk to station runners at the corners, left fielder Hayleigh Evans lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring pinch runner Jordan Acosta for a 1-0 lead. Just minutes later, the Rams doubled their advantage on the strength of consecutive infield singles and a bases-loaded walk. The CSU lead could have been even more if not for a sliding, inning-ending grab in shallow right center by DerMargosian.
Jefferson delivered for the Longhorns to tie the count at 2-2 in the bottom of the second. The Humble, Texas, product followed two-out Leahy and Alcozer singles by lifting a bloop, two-RBI double to right center that just eluded a diving catch attempt by Colorado State center fielder Ashley Michelena.
The Rams moved in front to stay during the fourth as shortstop Haley Donaldson's single ricocheted off the first-base bag, plating Michelena from 60 feet away to make it 3-2.
Meanwhile, Texas couldn't quite string enough together to add to its run total, leaving a pair in scoring position to end the third and managing single base runners on walks during both the fourth and fifth frames against CSU starter Bridgette Hutton.
Looking for valuable insurance, Colorado State got just that to secure a 6-2 advantage in the seventh. After registering two quick outs in relief, Texas relief pitcher Brooke Bolinger walked catcher Amber Nelson and Buchanan consecutively to station a pair aboard. The free passes soon came back to haunt the Horns as first baseman Hannah McCorkill drove a three-run HR down the left field line.
Needing some late McCombs Field magic, it wouldn't come against the Rams as the Horns went down in order on three consecutive groundouts to conclude the contest.
