NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Texas Track & Field sent it's men's distance medley relay squad to the Alex Wilson Invitational with the goal of finishing near the front and posting a time that could qualify for the NCAA Championships.
The Longhorns finished sixth with a time of 9:31.80. After a conversion rate to account for Notre Dame's over-sized home track, Texas will rank 13th, according to Assistant Coach Brad Herbster. With the top 12 DMR teams qualifying for NCAAs, Texas finds itself looking toward the Big 12 Championship next week for another chance to qualify.
"The guys ran hard and raced well," Herbster said. "We had a 4-second lead at one point in our heat. We drew the slower heat and had to race on our own for a stretch. But I'm still very proud of our effort. I think we have a great DMR with the guys we ran today and we will look to Big 12s and see what we can do there to score big points for the team and try to win another Big 12 title."
Texas ran the combination of junior Alex Rogers (1200m), freshman Micaiah Harris (400m), senior Logan Emery (800m) and freshman Sam Worley (1600m).
Coming to Alex Wilson to qualify for NCAAs has been the trend the past decade in the sport with this meet advancing multiple DMRs to the championship each year. The last two years five of the 12 teams to qualify did so at the Alex Wilson Invite. Three of the top four times ever run by Longhorns have now come at the meet with Saturday's time ranking No. 4 in school history.
The last time a Texas DMR ran faster was 2009 when the Longhorns ran 9:30.77 to rank No. 2 in school history.
Texas will await results from other meets this weekend and the remainder of the conference championship meets across the country next week to see where the Longhorns rank in the DMR for NCAAs.
