Sophia Schubert and Kaitlyn Papp each record top-10 individual finishes.
NAPA, Calif. - Senior Sophia Schubert and freshman Kaitlyn Papp each recorded top-10 individual finishes, as the No. 6 Texas women's golf team finished seventh at the Silverado Showdown on Tuesday at the Silverado Resort and Country Club.
Texas posted a 10-over-par three-round total of 874 (295-287-292) to place seventh overall among a highly competitive tournament field that, in addition to the Longhorns, included seven of the nation's top-20 teams. No. 8 Southern California claimed the team title with a five-under-par 859 (290-287-282).
As a team, the Longhorns had the best scoring average among the tournament field on both par-three (3.08, +5) and par-five (4.82, -11) holes.
Schubert posted her fifth top-10 finish in five events this season and her fourth top-five finish, concluding the Silverado Showdown in a tie for fifth place. Schubert turned in a three-under-par 213 (72-68-73).
Papp recorded her seventh top-10 finish in 10 events this season with a one-under-par 214 (74-69-72) to tie for ninth place. Papp, who notched her team-leading 16th round at par or better with a 72 on the final day, impressively went bogie-free for the final 40 holes of the event. She led the tournament field with 47 pars on the week. Papp has five bogey-free rounds on the season.
Sophomore Emilee Hoffman finished tied for 28th with a five-over-par 221 (75-73-73), marking her seventh time in 10 events to finish in the top-30 individually this season. Hoffman had the best par-five scoring average (4.58, -5) among the tournament field this week.
Sophomore Greta Isabella Voelker, competing as an individual, tied for 52nd overall with an 11-over-par 227 (72-78-77). Freshman Agathe Laisne (74-79-75) and junior Maddie Luitwieler (77-77-74) each tied for 58th with 12-over-par 228s.
Texas now turns its attention to the Big 12 Conference Championship, which will take place April 20-22 at the Dallas Athletic Club in Dallas, Texas. The Longhorns are defending champions after claiming the 2017 event in San Antonio.
POST-TOURNAMENT QUOTES
TEXAS HEAD COACH RYAN MURPHY
On senior Sophia Schubert's fifth-place finish …
"It was another fine week for Sophia. Since the start of 2018, she has been building. Each week she has gotten stronger, sharper and she is gaining confidence with each competitive round. Sophia is trending in the right direction."
On freshman Kaitlyn Papp's top-10 finish and 40 consecutive holes without a bogey …
"Kaitlyn is playing some terrific golf - another top-10. She is just so solid with all parts of her game shored up. She just finished her last 40 holes without a bogey. Five rounds this season without a bogey - I've never heard of any freshman doing that - ever. I'm super proud of this young lady and there's more to come."
On Texas' seventh-place team finish at the Silverado Showdown …
"Teamwise, we were in a good position starting today, but just didn't get it going. +4 is not a bad team score on that golf course, but obviously we'll need more if we want to compete against a few of those teams. We are capable. The next seven days for us will be about getting things tightened up and showing our best golf at the end of this season."
