FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Texas Track & Field faces some of the nation's top teams this weekend at the National Relay Championships and the meet started off with a win for senior Fabian Dohmann in the men's javelin.
Dohmann notched his fourth win in five meets as he continues to post big throws. He measured a winning distance of 73.86 meters (242-2) to again dominate the competition. Dohmann won the event by just under 20 feet. The fifth-year senior has now posted throws over 230 feet in all five of his meets.
The top performance of the day on the track for the women went to sophomore Serenity Douglas, who came away with a runner-up finish in the 400 meters and one of the top times in the nation this season. Douglas ran 52.20 to finish just behind Florida's Sharrika Barnett. Her time ranks her No. 2 in the Big 12 this season and also is in the top 10 in the NCAA.
Junior Zola Golden was right on Douglas' heels in fourth place and a time of 52.48. That's her fastest time of the season and makes her No. 4 in the Big 12.
The first event on the track was the women's 100 meter hurdles and featured one of the deepest fields in the entire meet with many of the top athletes in the NCAA going head-to-head. Texas brought its group of female hurdlers along for the ride to show their depth and came away with two top 10 finishes.
Sophomore Rushelle Burton finished third with a time of 12.73 seconds. Senior Pedrya Seymour crossed in sixth place in 13.04.
The men's hurdles also had a strong showing from Texas with John Burt finishing fifth in 13.98 seconds, his fastest wind-legal time of the season.
Mid-distance runners had a good day on the track for Texas as Charles Mills ran his best time ever in the 1,500 meters. He won his heat in 3:46.76 to cut four seconds off his previous personal best time and placed him seventh overall after winning his heat. That time also adds him to the list of contenders in the Big 12, ranking No. 4 in the conference and giving Texas three men in the top five with the championship meet next on the schedule. Senior Jake McConnell posted a PR in the men's 800m with his time of 1:53.01.
This meet features seven different relay events that will be scored like a championship meet to determine a men's and women's team champion and the Longhorns closed the night at the National Relay Championships with their first performance in the relay competition.
The men's 4x1,500m relay squad of Sam Worley, John Rice, Logan Emery and Alex Rogers clocked in at 15:19.46 to finish in fourth place and score five points. That time ranks third in school history.
Texas is entered in four of the seven relay events on each side with the conclusion of the meet coming Saturday. The men will run the other two distance relays on Saturday in the 4x800 and distance medley. Texas women are emphasizing their depth and talent in the sprint events with entries in the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 relays.
