04.06.2018 | Men's Golf
Senior Doug Ghim becomes the third Longhorn to achieve the low amateur honor for the fourth time in Texas Men’s Golf history.
AUGUSTA, Ga. – Texas Men's Golf senior Doug Ghim followed a first-round 72 with a second-round 76 to advance to the weekend at the 2018 Masters Tournament at Augusta National on Friday.
Ghim is the only amateur to advance after the first two rounds, earning the Masters Low Amateur honor. He joins Ben Crenshaw (1972, 1973) and David Gossett (2000) in Texas Men's Golf history.
He is the second Longhorn to finish as the low amateur in a major tournament in the last year, as senior teammate Scottie Scheffler finished as the low amateur in the 2017 U.S. Open.
Ghim began the day with a double-bogey, but fired back with back-to-back birdies on two's par-5 and three's par-6. He made two more bogeys and one double bogey to close the front nine at 4-over par, but made four-consecutive pars to start the back nine. He made a bogey on 14's par-4, but evened his score out with a birdie on 16's par-4 in between four pars to finish the day at 4-over.
He will enter the third round in a tie for 40th, 13 strokes behind leader Patrick Reed.
Longhorns Jordan Spieth and Jhonattan Vegas will also play into the weekend. Spieth followed a first-round 66 with a 74 to tie for fourth, while Vegas shot 77-69 to tie for 28th.
Ghim will tee off at 10 a.m. CT on Saturday with Bernhard Langer, Vegas at 11 a.m. with Ryan Moore, and Spieth at 1:10 p.m. with Dustin Johnson.
