Texas finishes tied for 12th at the 2018 NCAA Championship.
STILLWATER, Okla. - The Texas women's golf team capped off one of the most successful seasons in program history Monday with a 12th-place finish at the 2018 NCAA Championship at Karsten Creek Golf Club. It marked the highest NCAA Championship finish for the Longhorns since 2004.
Texas turned in a 40-over-par four-round total of 1192 (309-300-291-292) to tie for 12th place overall. The top-eight teams in the field following Monday's fourth round of stroke play have advanced to match play to determine the 2018 NCAA Champion.
The Longhorns, who won the Big 12 Championship for the second consecutive year in 2018, totaled three team victories on the year, marking the most for the program in a single season since 1992-93. Texas also twice earned tournament runner-up honors in 2017-18 and had nine top-five team finishes in 13 events.
It was the third consecutive NCAA Championship appearance for the Longhorns and 27th all-time. The tie for 12th place was the best for Texas since tying for sixth in 2004.
Senior Sophia Schubert completed her decorated career for the Longhorns with a tie for 21st place, her best career NCAA finish. Schubert turned in a two-under-par 70 in Monday's final round to finish with a four-over-par four-round total of 292 (75-75-72-70). Schubert's 2017-18 final stroke average of 71.76 breaks her own single-season stroke average record of 72.49 set last season.
For her impressive three seasons at Texas, Schubert posted two wins, 14 top-five finishes, 19 top-10s and 28 top-20s. As a senior in 2017-18, Schubert finished in the top 25 of all eight tournaments in which she competed, with seven top-10 showings and five top-five finishes.
Freshman Kaitlyn Papp, who in 2017-18 became the first person in program history to be named Big 12 Player of the Year and Big 12 Freshman of the Year in the same season, finished tied for 38th. She carded an eight-over-par four-round total of 296 (79-72-70-75). Papp won two tournaments and finished the year with a team-leading 20 rounds at par or better. Her stroke average of 72.05 in her rookie season goes down as the second-best single-season stroke average in program history.
Freshman Agathe Laisne tied for 60th overall with a 16-over-par 304 (76-77-76-75), while sophomore Emilee Hoffman, a 2018 All-Big 12 Conference honoree, tied for 62nd with a 17-over-par 305 (79-81-73-72). Sophomore Greta Isabella Voelker tied for 83rd with a 42-over-par 330 (83-76-84-87).
It was a record-setting year in so many regards for the Longhorns. Texas, on two occasions, recorded the best 18-hole team round (274) in program history and also charted three of the top-four 54-hole team tournament scores. Five of the top-10 all-time individual 54-hole tournament totals were achieved this season. Hoffman and Papp, while playing in the third round of the Schooner Fall Classic, set the school records for best 18-hole round (64) and best round relative to par (-7) in school history. Texas golfers recorded 19 rounds in the 60s.
POST-TOURNAMENT QUOTES
TEXAS HEAD COACH RYAN MURPHY
"Our team played a couple great rounds yesterday and today. Unfortunately, we let too many shots slip away in round one, which was too much to overcome. Overall, it was a great effort on a very demanding golf course. Even though we did not reach our goal of reaching the top-eight, our team had a very nice season - three team titles and three individual titles, and another Big 12 Championship. I've very proud of each of our young women for their play this season and how they have represented Texas."
