Scheffler leads Men’s Golf in partial NCAA Championship opening round

Senior All-American is 4-under-par through 10 holes to lead Texas to a fifth-place team standing before Friday’s play suspended due to darkness.

STILLWATER, Okla. — University of Texas senior All-American Scottie Scheffler posted a 4-under-par score through his first 10 holes to lead the Men's Golf team to a fifth-place team standing before play was suspended Friday evening at the NCAA Championship at Karsten Creek Golf Club. The Longhorns, who are currently on holes 10-14, will resume first-round play Saturday, May 26 at 7 a.m. Central.
Scheffler tallied an eagle on the par-5 first hole before adding birdies on holes 6 and 8 to record a front-nine total of 4-under-par 32. He drained a par putt on the 10th hole just prior to the horn sounding to suspend play. Scheffler is tied for fifth on the individual leader board, just one stroke back of a quartet of players at 5-under-par.
Senior Doug Ghim, who earlier this week won the Ben Hogan Award, is even par through nine complete holes. When play resumes, he will have a short par putt on hole 10. Ghim birdied his first hole and added seven pars.
Junior Steven Chervony registered three birdies in a four-hole stretch (holes 4, 6 and 7) and stands at even-par through 12 holes. Redshirt freshman Drew Jones stands at 2-over-par through 13 holes, recording a birdie on the par-4 second hole. Sophomore Spencer Soosman is 3-over-par through 11 holes, after making a birdie on the par-3 hole 11 just prior to the suspension of play.
Following the conclusion of opening-round action on Saturday morning, the Longhorns will begin their second-round play immediately on hole 10 alongside Clemson and Texas Tech.
The top 15 teams following Sunday's third round will advance to Monday's final round of stroke play. Only the top eight teams after the completion of Monday's final round will move on to the Match Play portion of the NCAA Championship. Match play quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled for Tuesday, May 29, and the Championship final is set for Wednesday, May 30.
