Men’s Golf in 10th place after NCAA Championship third round

Senior All-Americans Doug Ghim and Scottie Scheffler both within striking distance for individual medalist honors entering Monday’s final round of stroke play.

STILLWATER, Okla. — Senior All-Americans Doug Ghim and Scottie Scheffler each fired a 2-under-par 70 to lead The University of Texas Men's Golf team into 10th place Sunday after the third round in the NCAA Championship at Karsten Creek Golf Club. Only the top 15 squads in the 30-team field advanced to Monday's final round of stroke play.
Ghim recorded four birdies (holes 12, 15, 18 and 1) against a pair of bogeys and moved into a tie for third in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 6-under-par 210 (71-69-70). He is just three strokes behind tournament leader Bryson Nimmer (Clemson) at 9-under-par 207.
Scheffler overcame a slow start for the second straight day, as he began the round 3-over-par through his first three holes. He turned it around with birdies on holes 14 and 16 and finished his front nine with a seven-foot putt for eagle on the par-five 18th hole. Scheffler recorded three birdies against two bogeys on his back nine and rests in sixth place in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 5-under-par 211 (67-74-70), just four strokes off the lead.
Sophomore Spencer Soosman registered 13 pars to go along with a birdie at the par-3 hole 7, where knocked his tee shot within a foot of the pin. He finished with a 4-over-par 76 and is tied for 96th in the individual standings at 11-over-par 227 (76-75-76).
Redshirt freshman Drew Jones recorded four birdies on the day en route to a 7-over-par 79. He is in 145th place in the individual standings at 22-over-par 238 (81-78-79). Junior Steven Chervony posted a pair of birdies and registered an 8-over-par 80. He is tied for 107th in the individual standings at 12-over-par 228 (75-73-80).
Texas will tee off in Monday's final round of stroke play beginning at 12:20 p.m. Central from hole 10 alongside Arkansas and Clemson. Only the top eight teams after the completion of Monday's round will move on to the Match Play portion of the NCAA Championship. Match play quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled for Tuesday, May 29, and the Championship final is set for Wednesday, May 30.
Golf Channel will provide live national coverage of Monday's final round of stroke play from 3-7 p.m. Central. The NCAA Championship will also be the focus of the network's one-hour "Golf Central Post-Game" show from 7-8 pm. Central on Monday, when the awards ceremony for the individual medalist will occur.
