No. 23 Soccer blows past Stephen F. Austin on Sunday, 5-0
09.02.2018 | Soccer
The five goals were the most for Texas since scoring seven against Sam Houston State on Sept. 2, 2016
AUSTIN, Texas – Not even a 49-minute, first-half lightning delay could cool off No. 23 Texas soccer (4-0-1) on Sunday evening at Mike A. Myers Stadium as the Longhorns tickled the twine a season-high five times while rolling past Stephen F. Austin (2-3-0), 5-0.
The five-goal outburst marked the most for the Burnt Orange & White since knocking off Sam Houston State back on Sept. 2, 2016, 7-0. The Longhorns also out-shot the LadyJacks by an impressive total of 25-2, including 9-1 in shots on goal, and SFA didn't record its initial shot of the contest until the 79th minute of play.
With the victory, Texas extended its non-conference home winning streak to 12 straight matches and its September winning skein to eight consecutive contests.
Redshirt sophomore forward Cydney Billups led the charge offensively by registering a first-half brace (two goals), while senior forward Alexa Adams, sophomore midfielder Haley Berg and senior midfielder Amber Stearns all scored their first goals of 2018. Redshirt sophomore forward Tecora Turner managed two assists, senior midfielder Katie Glenn picked up her team-leading fourth assist and junior defender Emma Jett was credited with her first helper of the campaign.
With both teams looking to establish themselves over the opening few minutes, it was Texas that managed to find the early advantage just 8:20 in. Glenn started the scoring play from seven yards past midfield in UT's end, driving a pass up the right wing into space. With Billups keeping a defender occupied on a strong run up the middle, Adams out-ran a pair of LadyJack defenders to corral the ball, dribbled 25 yards in towards frame in a 1-v-1 situation on SFA net minder Allyson Halliday and scored from six yards out under a diving keeper to make it 1-0.
Immediately following the UT goal, lightning was detected in the area forcing the teams off the pitch and the fans out of the stands during a 49-minute delay.
Perhaps Stephen F. Austin's best chance in the contest came out of the delay during the 16th minute as a quick counter attack saw the LadyJacks race into their offensive third in a 3-on-2 break. Forced to make a vital play, senior defender Paige Hooper did just that for the Longhorns, stepping up and managing to delay things long enough for UT to recover and clear the ball out of danger.
It wasn't long before Billups began her offensive onslaught against SFA. The Greenwood Village, Colo., native got on the board at 23:19 by hammering a 23-yard drive from outside the top of the box into the upper right 90 to make it 2-0.
It took just 2:47 of match time for Billups to get back in the scoring column. Turner passed a ball back to Jett who launched a cross from the left wing into the edge of the 18-yard box. Somehow, an on-the-run Billups managed to chip an 11-yard header into the left side of the netting to boost UT in front, 3-0.
The advantage almost became four at the 40:38 mark as a Berg blast from just inside the top of the 18 was parried away by Halliday.
Out of the halftime break, the Longhorns resumed their shooting gallery, registering a 16-2 advantage over the final 45 minutes despite mass substitutions all over the pitch.
Texas eventually located its fourth during the 73rd minute as Berg got herself into the scoring column by bending a 22-yard effort into the upper right 90.
Stephen F. Austin finally recorded its first shot at 78:31 as a long pass up the middle dropped right in front of a running Elise Davis. With two UT defenders quickly closing the gap, Davis managed a leaping volley from 25+ yards out that ventured harmlessly wide left.
The Burnt Orange & White finalized their offensive output at 88:22 as Stearns stepped to the spot and calmly knocked home a penalty kick to make it 5-0.
The LadyJacks' Kim Campos forced the only UT save of the match on a shot from distance at 89:34 as substitute sophomore goalkeeper Savannah Madden corralled the ball easily to help finish off the victory.
