Junior All-American defeats Tiphanie Fiquet (France) in straight sets on Thursday morning.
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — University of Texas Bianca Turati posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Tiphanie Fiquet (France) on Thursday morning in the Round of 16 at the ITF (International Tennis Federation) pro circuit event at Van Der Meet Shipyard Racquet Club. Fiquet is currently ranked No. 1,068 in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) world singles rankings.
Turati advances to face Allura Zamarripa (USA) in Friday's quarterfinals. Since fall classes began at UT, this marks the second-consecutive ITF pro event that Turati has reached the quarterfinals in the singles main draw. She also advanced to the quarterfinals at the ITF event in Lubbock, Texas earlier in September.
With Turati and Fiquet tied at 3-3 in the opening set of Thursday's match, Turati saved three break points and managed to hold serve for a 4-3 lead. She then broke Fiquet and held serve again to close out the first set.
Turati took control early in the second set, jumping out to a 3-0 advantage. After Fiquet broke Turati to trim the lead to 3-1, Turati responded with a service break and won the next two games to finish the match.
Turati is No. 1 in the Oracle/ITA preseason women's collegiate national singles rankings. The 2018 Big 12 Conference Player of the Year posted a 28-4 overall singles mark and ended her sophomore season at No. 3 in the final Oracle/ITA Division I singles rankings. Turati spent nearly three months atop the ITA women's single rankings and produced a 16-2 dual-match record for the Longhorns at the No. 1 singles position in 2018. She became the first UT player to top the ITA singles rankings since Kelly Pace in 1995.
