Junior forward Cyera Hintzen scored her Big 12-leading ninth goal of the season at 76:09
STILLWATER, Okla. – On a chilly Friday night in front of 1,114 fans at Patterson Stadium, No. 8 Texas soccer (9-0-2, 1-0-1 Big 12 Conference) battled back from an early "own goal" to tie No. 13 Oklahoma State (10-1-1, 2-0-1 Big 12 Conference) in a physical top-15 match-up, 1-1 (2OT).
Junior forward Cyera Hintzen scored her league-leading ninth goal of the season at the 76:09 mark to dead-lock the contest, while junior defender Atu Mshana was credited with her first assist of the year on the score.
For the second-straight match, UT was playing without its two international starters, freshman midfielder Julia Grosso and freshman defender Emma Regan, who are currently off with the Canadian Women's Senior National Team preparing for the CONCACAF Women's Championship.
With the tie, the Longhorns remain one of just eight unbeaten teams left in all of NCAA Division I women's soccer (Washington State, Texas, FGCU, Georgetown, UC-Riverside, Colorado, USC and Stanford), are now 13-0-1 in their last 14 September matches dating back to Sept. 30, 2016, and are 7-2-5 in their last 14 OT matches.
Texas out-shot Oklahoma State during the match by an 18-14 total, led 5-3 in shots on goal and managed a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks.
OSU wasted no time getting the back-and-forth contest underway, delivering in a cross during the first minute that forced UT junior goalkeeper Nicole Curry to make a catch in a crowd.
It was sophomore midfielder Haley Berg that managed the first shot for either squad at 2:51, but her 18-yard effort drifted wide right.
UT continued its pressure over the next stretch of action as Hintzen fired high of frame at 6:07 and forced Hannah Warner's first save for the Cowgirls from distance at 12:09.
Despite Texas' early shot advantage, it was OSU that jumped in front at 22:23 via some Longhorns assistance. Oklahoma State delivered a cross from the right wing into the middle of the 18-yard box. Unfortunately, with a player from each team leaping in an attempt to win a 50/50 ball, a UT defender managed to chip a header up and over Curry and into goal for a shocking 1-0 OSU advantage.
The Burnt Orange & White soon began their work for an equalizer as senior midfielder Kayra Dollas had a shot blocked off a corner at 26:35.
Back at the other end, Oklahoma State continued to force Curry into action as the keeper managed to fight off three Cowgirl players at the top of the six-yard box and punch away another dangerous cross during the 30th minute.
The last effort for either team in the opening half came at 29:29 as freshman forward Mackenzie McFarland had a 16-yard try blocked by OSU's defense.
Out of the halftime break, it was the Cowgirls with the run of play early. Off a quick counter, forward Haley Woodard raced in towards the left post and forced a save from 12 yards out at 46:30. Then, at the 50:07 mark, forward Marlo Zoller had a shot blocked away and cleared.
Texas worked back into the contest offensively over the next few minutes. Off a long free kick during the 55th minute, a Berg delivery to the back post nearly found Dollas, but the ball traveled just a foot over the head of the leaping midfielder.
Oklahoma State nearly doubled its lead at 59:36 as Zoller rattled the crossbar with a shot from out front. The rebound deflected straight up in the air, forcing Curry to leap over an OSU player to punch it out of danger.
UT continued to search for the equalizer as senior midfielder Katie Glenn forced a save from distance at 62:24, Berg was wide on efforts at 68:38 and 70:16 and Hintzen forced a tough diving stop from 25 yards out at 74:09.
Finally, at 76:09 lightning struck for the Longhorns as Mshana played a ball over the top that landed right in front of Hintzen. The Garland, Texas, native somehow raced past a defender and chipped a 20-yard effort over the on-rushing keeper and just inside the left post to tie the match at 1-1.
It appeared that the Cowgirls had stolen the match away at 88:50 as a cross from the left wing was fumbled in a crowd by Curry before the loose ball was finished from eight yards out. The head official called an OSU foul during the collision between Curry and an Oklahoma State player, however, negating the goal and sending the teams to extra time.
Early in the first OT, Oklahoma State pressured UT's defensive end at 92:07 as Zoller forced a Curry save at the left post.
The Longhorns soon responded as freshman defender Cameron Brooks forced a stop off a header at 94:07, while Glenn was just wide with an attempt 47 seconds later.
All the real action during the first extra session came in the final minute as Texas senior forward Alexa Adams had a shot blocked from 18 yards out at 99:37.
Woodard immediately took off on a quick counter for OSU only to have three UT defenders, including Adams, race back to prevent nothing more than a 22-yard try that proved well high.
Both teams had chances in the second extra frame, but it was Texas that looked closest to stealing it at the death.
Berg launched an effort that was saved at the 108:22 mark and later had the ball at her feet in a little space inside the 18 with just seconds remaining. The Celina, Texas, product couldn't get off a shot, however, as OSU cleared its lines and finalized the dead-lock.
