The Longhorns now stand at 9-1-2 overall and 1-1-1 in Big 12 Conference action
FORT WORTH, Texas – On Sunday afternoon at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium, TCU (8-3-2, 1-2-1 Big 12 Conference) got a 78th minute goal from forward Yazmeen Ryan to hand No. 8 Texas soccer (9-1-2, 1-1-1 Big 12 Conference) its first loss of the season, 1-0.
Sophomore midfielder Haley Berg led the Longhorns offense with four shots, one on goal, while senior midfielder Katie Glenn managed three attempts. Junior goalkeeper Nicole Curry was very strong between the pipes for UT by making a season-high seven stops in the defeat.
TCU almost jumped to an early lead just 2:58 in as a long ball played over the top dropped in front of Horned Frog forward Messiah Bright. She out-paced a UT defender and raced in 1-v-1 only to be denied by the right leg of a sprawling Curry. A follow-up effort by Ryan from the top of the box went high of frame.
Curry was back in action again during the eighth minute as defender Tijana Djuricek's nine-yard shot was denied by the net minder on a dive near the right post.
Texas finally got on the board shot-wise at the 13:17 mark as Berg had an attempt blocked from 20+ yards out in the middle.
With the Longhorns settling more into the contest, junior forward Cyera Hintzen managed to play Glenn into some space in the right side of the 18-yard box via through ball. Unfortunately for the Burnt Orange & White, Glenn's effort from 15 yards out traveled high of frame at 14:36.
The Horned Frogs had another great opportunity to take the lead off a corner during the 22nd minute. On the delivery into the middle, Bright managed to out-leap the crowd and head a shot towards frame, but her try ventured a foot or two over the crossbar.
TCU continued to have the better of possession over the remainder of the first half with shots from Maddy Warren (28:34), Ryan (31:31) and McKenzie Oliver (34:39) going wide, being saved and going wide, respectively.
Out of the locker room, both teams had early chances to get on the scoreboard. The best for Texas came during the 52nd minute as senior defender Chelsea Surpris delivered a perfect cross from the deep right wing to the left post. Redshirt sophomore forward Cydney Billups managed to out-jump her marker, but her header from nine yards out traveled over the woodwork.
The Horned Frogs continued to buzz around the offensive third, earning corners in the 55th, 57th and 59th minutes. UT defended all three set pieces well with TCU managing just one shot from Djuricek that went high (55:00).
Berg put pressure on the Horned Frogs during the 69th minute, getting fouled while forcing a save from just outside the top of the box. Off the subsequent free kick, Berg blasted a shot into the TCU defensive wall. The rebound was eventually played out to Surpris, and she blasted a try from 30+ yards out that went just over the top left corner.
Back at the other end in the 71st minute, TCU's Warren fired a shot from outside the top of the 18 that Curry had to tip up-and-over the crossbar.
After threatening numerous times throughout the contest, the Horned Frogs finally grabbed the lead at the 77:00 mark. A ball chipped over the top dropped right in front of Ryan out on the right wing. The forward settled the ball, and with a step on a UT defender, moved in 1-v-1 on Curry to score into the bottom left corner for a 1-0 lead.
Texas continued to battle down the stretch, earning an 83rd minute corner and registering a pair of shots in the 86th minute. During that final outburst, Glenn launched a shot from the top of the 18 that was blocked. The rebound ricocheted to senior forward Alexa Adams in the left edge of the box, but her eventual volleyed effort was also blocked as TCU eventually finished off its victory.
