AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Texas Cross Country program will race for the second straight weekend when they head to the Norry Hersey Rice Invitational in Houston on Friday night. The women's 4k starts at 6:15 p.m. while the men's 6k race begins at 6:45 p.m.
The Longhorns had strong meets on both sides to open the season at last weekend's Texas Invitational. Senior Pedro Nasta won the men's 5k with a time of 15:06.10, helping UT to a team victory over Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern. Junior Destiny Collins won the women's 4k in 12:58.20 to lead the Longhorns to wins over the same two schools.
Only five men ran for the Longhorns in addition to Nasta, all finishing in the top eight. Junior Matthew McClellan was third with a time of 15:22.90 while freshman Thomas Hinojosa was fourth. Trevor Heinz, Brandon Gracia and Brendan Hebert also ran for the Horns.
"We are going to run the same group that we did last week," men's cross country coach Pete Watson said. "This is a group that needs experience racing and learning to compete at the college level. The group ran well last week and these guys are all eager to have another chance to race."
The Longhorns ran three teams in the women's competition, as senior Alex Cruz finished runner-up to Collins. Abby Guidry and Skyler Bollinger rounded out the top five. In total, runners on UT's women's roster took each of the top 18 spots.
"We are excited to have another opportunity to race on Friday night," women's cross country coach PattiSue Plumer said. "This will be a good test for our women to go on the road and race against Rice and other good competitors and at an unfamiliar course. It will be a great chance to put what we've worked on in training this week into action in a race setting."
