No. 6 Women’s Tennis posts seven wins on first day at Freeman Memorial

Junior Petra Granic advances to the singles quarterfinals with a pair of straight-set victories on Friday.
LAS VEGAS, Nevada — The No. 6 University of Texas women's tennis team recorded a total of seven victories during Friday's opening day of competition in the Freeman Memorial Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on UNLV's campus. Junior Petra Granic, No. 53 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, advanced to the singles quarterfinals by recording a pair of impressive straight-set victories.
Granic opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-0 victory against North Carolina's Chloe Oullet-Pizer. She returned later in the afternoon and registered a 6-4, 6-1 win against Izumi Asano of UNLV.
Sophomore Bojana Markovic had UT's signature victory of the day. She rallied to upset Florida's Ida Jarlskog, the tournament's top seed who entered play ranked No. 9 nationally, by a score of 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round. Markovic later fell to Adriana Lekaj of Pepperdine (6-1, 6-1) in the Round of 16.
After dropping their respective opening-round matches, junior Anna Turati and sophomore Fernanda Labraña both responded in the afternoon with wins in the singles consolation bracket. Turati, No. 49 in the ITA rankings, defeated Florida's Anastasia Khartionova by a 6-1, 6-2 margin. Labraña, ranked No. 77, posted a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) victory against Stanford's Kimberly Lee.
Two of UT's three doubles pairings competing in Las Vegas advanced to the quarterfinals in the 16-team bracket. Markovic and Labraña recorded a 6-4 win against Pepperdine's duo of Ashley Lahey and Adriana Lekaj. Granic completed a perfect 3-for-3 day by pairing with freshman Tijana Spasojevic for a 6-3 victory against McCartney Kessler and Sydney Berlin of Florida.
Saturday's action will begin with doubles quarterfinals at Noon Central (10 a.m. Pacific), followed by two additional rounds of singles. The prestigious tournament features players from six of the top 11 teams in the most recent ITA national rankings, including No. 1 Stanford, No. 3 North Carolina, No. 6 Texas, No. 7 Pepperdine, No. 8 UCLA and No. 11 Florida along with host UNLV.
