AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Men's and Women's Cross Country teams, each nationally ranked after strong performances in the Big 12 Championships and NCAA South Central Regional, will compete in the NCAA Championships on Saturday morning in Terre Haute, Indiana.
The Texas women, ranked No. 29 in the latest U. S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association poll, will answer the starter's gun at 10:15 a.m. CT on the 6K track. One hour later, the No. 27 Longhorn men will challenge the 10K version of the course.
Both races will take place at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, the 13th time in the last 18 years that Indiana State University has hosted the NCAA Division I Championship meet.
Both Texas squads earned automatic berths to the NCAA meet, one of only seven programs in the country to have both the men's and women's programs earn automatic bids. The men finished first and the women second in the South Central Regional held on Nov. 15 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Each UT team placed six runners among the top-25 finishers, with all 12 earning All-Region honors for their effort. UT's 12 All-Region honorees is tied for the second-most by a program in the country this year. It was the first regional title for the UT men since 2012. Sam Worley's first-place finish won Texas' first individual medal in regional competition since 2003.
The Texas women finished second and the men third in the Big 12 Conference meet in Waco, Texas, back on Nov. 2. Four women and three men earned all-conference honors.
In the NCAA Championships on Saturday, each UT squad will compete against 30 other teams, 18 of which received automatic berths for finishing first or second in their respective regional meets. Eleven other squads received berths on an at-large basis. In addition, select individuals that were a part of teams that did not qualify were chosen to compete.
"We are looking forward to the competition," said Texas women's distance coach PattiSue Plumer. "This is what we have been working toward since June. So far this season we have hit our goals and look forward to doing the same on Saturday."
"The boys are fit and ready to go," said Texas men's distance coach Pete Watson. "They've worked hard all season and gotten better each week."
Saturday will mark the Texas women's 17th appearance in the NCAA Cross Country Championship meet. The Longhorns captured their lone cross country national title back in 1986. Since the men's cross country program began in 1954, Texas has finished among the top-10 teams on seven occasions.
Northern Arizona has won the last three men's NCAA Cross Country Championships, while Colorado is the defending women's champion.
