AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Texas Track & Field program heads to San Antonio and the UTSA Invitational this weekend to begin the outdoor campaign. Coming off NCAA Indoor Championships last week, a small contingent of Longhorns will open their outdoor season over the weekend.
"We are excited to begin the outdoor season this weekend down in San Antonio," head coach Edrick Floréal said. "Our javelin and discus throwers have been anxious to compete, so this weekend will be a great opportunity for them to kick off their seasons.
"Our ultimate goal for outdoor season is to have a successful NCAA Championships meet at home. It's an exciting opportunity to host the prestigious meet each of the next two years inside Mike A. Myers Stadium. This weekend is the first step in the process towards a successful outdoor campaign. With the Texas Relays less than two weeks away, the entire team is looking to continue building momentum from the indoor season so that we can achieve our goals throughout the spring."
Three Longhorns make their season debut with the javelin this weekend. Stanford graduate transfer Trevor Danielson will begin his career in the burnt orange on Friday night, coming off a fourth-place finish at NCAA Outdoors a season ago. Both Katelyn Anderson and Camille Johnson make their collegiate debuts, as well.
Elena Bruckner, the school record holder in the discus, begins her outdoor campaign this weekend with the hammer throw on Friday afternoon and the discus on Saturday morning. Both high jumpers - Jared Dupree and Marleen Guerrero - open their outdoor campaign. Dupree finished eighth at Big 12 Championships indoors in the event. In the pole vault, Grahm Gonzalez, Olivia Buntin and Martha Hughes will open their outdoor season, while heptathlete Virginia Preiss will run the 800m on Saturday to close the day for the Horns.
This weekend's UTSA Invitational features Kentucky, Purdue, Texas A&M-CC, UTRGV and UTSA in addition to the Longhorns. After this weekend, the Longhorns will return to UTSA for next weekend's Roadrunner Invitational before the 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays the following week.
