FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Powered by an impressive second-round 69 by freshman Hailee Cooper, the No. 2 Texas women's golf team is currently in third place following 36 holes of stroke play at the NCAA Championship, hosted by the University of Arkansas at Blessings Golf Club.
The Longhorns have carded a 12-over-par two-round total of 596 [302-294] to stand in third place. No. 3 Duke leads the field with a two-over-par 586 [305-281], while No. 1 Southern California is in second with an 11-over-par 595 [306-289].
"We're in a good position right now," Texas head coach Ryan Murphy said. "We were in a good position after round one and we salvaged this round after a slow start. We didn't get off to a good start yesterday, but finishing at two-over par was good. I like where we're sitting right now."
Texas completed the second round on Sunday morning after play was suspended at 12:15 p.m. CT Saturday due to inclement weather. Sophomore Agathe Laisne had one hole to finish and junior Emilee Hoffman had two to complete.
"I think we handled [the weather delay] pretty well," Murphy said. "We had an opportunity to get this golf course a little bit yesterday. It was a little more tame. We did okay and we salvaged it."
As a team, the Longhorns lead the field with 111 pars on the week. They also have recorded 25 birdies. Texas has the second-best average of all teams this week on par-four holes [4.23, +21].
The stroke-play portion of the NCAA Championship has been shortened to 54 holes. The final round of stroke play will take place on Monday with the Longhorns set to tee off at 1:01 p.m. CT. The top-eight teams following Monday's round will advance to the match-play quarterfinals.
