No. 5 Men’s Golf advances to NCAA Match Play Championship

The Longhorns defeated Oklahoma (3-2) in the quarterfinals and topped Oklahoma State (3-2) in the semifinals on Tuesday.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The No. 5 Texas Men's Golf team posted hard-fought 3-2 victories against Oklahoma in the quarterfinals and Oklahoma State in the semifinals on Tuesday during the NCAA Championship Match Play at Blessings Golf Club. With the two wins, the Longhorns advance to face Stanford in the NCAA Championship match on Wednesday, May 29 at 6:45 a.m. Central.
This marks UT's third appearance in the NCAA Championship match since the NCAA adopted the match-play format in 2009. The Longhorns previously made NCAA Match Play Championship appearances in 2012 (defeated Alabama, 3-2) and 2016 (lost to Oregon, 3-2). Texas has won three NCAA team titles in men's golf: 1971, 1972 and 2012.
In Tuesday's quarterfinal contest against Oklahoma, freshman Parker Coody rallied from a 1-down deficit through 14 holes to provide the clinching point with a 1-up victory against Garett Reband. In the semifinal match against top-seed and defending NCAA Champion Oklahoma State, senior Steven Chervony made a birdie putt on 18 to even the contest and then closed out the match in 19 holes when OSU's Zach Bauchou missed a short par putt.
The Oklahoma State Match (NCAA Semifinals)
- Freshman Pierceson Coody notched the first point for the Longhorns with a 5&4 win against Hayden Wood. Wood won the first hole and held a 1-up lead through four holes. Coody won back-to-back holes (5 and 6), then added wins at 9, 12, 13 and 14 to close out the match.
- Freshman Cole Hammer gave the Longhorns a 2-0 lead with an impressive 4&3 victory against NCAA individual medalist Matthew Wolff. Hammer, who never trailed in the contest, won the first and third holes to go 2-up. After Wolff won the fourth hole, Hammer responded with wins at 5, 8 and 9 to build a 4-up cushion at the turn. Wolff trimmed the lead to 3-up with a win at 11, but Hammer answered with a win at 12 and held the 4-up lead until he closed out the match at 15.
- Junior Spencer Soosman fell 2&1 to Viktor Hovland. Tied through nine holes, Soosman won the 10th hole to move to 1-up but Hovland answered by winning four straight holes to move to 3-up through 14. Soosman won back-to-back holes (15 and 16), but Hovland won the 17th hole to finish the match.
- Freshman Parker Coody dropped a 3&2 decision to Austin Eckroat. Tied through the first 10 holes, Eckroat won 11 and 12 to build a 2-up cushion. Eckroat then won the 15th hole and closed out the match on 16.
- Senior Steven Chervony clinched the win in 19 holes against Zach Bauchou in dramatic fashion. In a match that the lead never increased to more than 1-up, Chervony took his first lead by winning holes 14 and 15. Bauchou won the next two holes (16 and 17), before Chervony rolled in a 15-foot birdie on 18 to even the match. On the first extra hole (hole 1 on the course), Chervony made par and Bauchou missed his short par putt.
The Oklahoma Match (NCAA Quarterfinals, started on hole 10)
- Freshman Cole Hammer recorded the first point for Texas with a dominant 7&5 victory against Patrick Welch. Tied through three holes, Hammer won four consecutive holes (13, 14, 15 and 16) before Welch won 17. Hammer responded with wins on 18 and 1 to build a 5-up lead. He then won holes 3 and 4 to close out the match.
- Junior Spencer Soosman fell 3&1 to Brad Dalke. Tied through four holes, Dalke won holes 14 and 16 to go 2-up before Soosman won hole 18. Dalke increased his lead to 2-up again with a win at hole 4. Soosman answered with a win on hole 6, but Dalke won holes 7 and 8 to close out the victory.
- Freshman Pierceson Coody dropped a 2&1 decision to Quade Cummins. Tied through five holes, Cummins won hole 15 and 17 to build a 2-up cushion before Coody responded with a win at 18. Cummins answered with wins at 2 and 3 to increase his lead to 3-up. Coody won hole 5, but Cummins held his 2-up margin before closing out the match at 8.
- Senior Steven Chervony tied the match at 2-2 with a 4&3 victory against Blaine Hale. Tied through five holes, Chervony picked up wins at holes 15, 17 and 2 to build a 3-up lead. He then added a win at hole 6 to close out the match.
- Freshman Parker Coody clinched the win with a 1-up victory against Garett Reband. Tied through five holes, Coody won hole 15 and held a 1-up lead through 11 holes. Reband won holes 3 and 4 to go 1-up, but Coody responded with a win at 6 to draw even. Tied through 16 holes, Coody made a short birdie on 8 to win the hole and halved hole 9 to close out the victory.
