Texas senior Ashtin Zamzow becomes just the second woman in program history to be named a semifinalist for the prestigious honor.
AUSTIN, Texas – University of Texas senior Ashtin Zamzow was named a semifinalist for The Bowerman, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Wednesday afternoon. The award is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female NCAA track and field athletes in the nation.
Zamzow is just the second Longhorn on the women's side to be named a semifinalist for the prestigious honor, joining Courtney Okolo, who was twice a semifinalist and went on to win the award in 2016. This outdoor season, Zamzow became Texas' most-decorated heptathlete, winning the program's first NCAA and Big 12 titles in the event, along with being the first Longhorn to win the heptathlon at the Texas Relays.
At the NCAA Outdoor Championships last week, Zamzow broke her own school record with 6,222 points, setting or matching personal bests in four events. She set personal bests in the 100m hurdles (13.33), 200m (24.23) and long jump (19-8 ¾), and matched her all-time best in the high jump (1.78/5-10) en route to the ninth-best point total in collegiate history. She also became just the second heptathlete to win the event at their home track.
Just over a month ago, Zamzow took home Texas' first Big 12 title in the heptathlon, winning the event by more than 50 points over K-State heptathlete Lauren Taubert in Norman, Okla. The senior also earned a Big 12 crown in the javelin with a throw of 48.57m/159-04, which was the third-straight title for UT in the event.
The Bowerman will be handed out in mid-December at the 2019 USTFCCCA Convention in Orlando, Fla.
