AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Texas Track & Field team is set to host the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships from June 5-8 at Mike A. Myers Stadium that will feature 20 Longhorn entries.
Texas will be led on the women's side by a pair of top seeds in Teahna Daniels and Ashtin Zamzow. Daniels tied for the best time of both the East and West Prelims, going 10.99 at the West Preliminaries two weeks ago to become the third-fastest performer in school history. Daniels also put down a program-best in Sacramento in the 200m (22.51) and is the third seed in the event. Zamzow, who holds the six highest point totals by a Longhorn in the heptathlon, comes into the national championships with the top seed as well. She set the program-record and the top mark in the NCAA this year with a point total of 6148 at the Texas Relays - becoming the first Longhorn in program history to win the event at the Texas Relays.
After breaking the school record in the 3000m steeplechase (9:58.07), Anna McDonald comes into the outdoor championships as the No. 14 seed, while a pair of field athletes, Georgia Wahl (triple jump – 23rd) and Sophia Falco (long jump – 14th) enter with top-25 marks.
The Longhorn men recorded nine top-10 seeds for the NCAA Outdoor Championships with Tripp Piperi coming in as the top seed in the shot put - throwing for the best mark (20.83m/68-4.25) at the preliminaries in the event. Big 12 title holders Sam Worley (1500m) and Steffin McCarter (long jump) earned the second seed in their respective event, with Worley having dropped a time of 3:40.89 in Sacramento and McCarter a mark of 7.91m.
After having broken the program record in the 200m (20.21), Micaiah Harris earned the eighth seed in the event, while Alex Rogers and John Rice will be the fourth and ninth seed in the 3000m steeplechase.
The Longhorns are coming off the West Preliminaries that took place from May 23-25 in Sacramento, Calif. which served as the qualifier for the national championships. The top-12 from the East and West Prelims advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Longhorns broke four school records in Sacramento with Harris (200m – 32-year-old) and freshman Jonathan Jones (400m – 27-year-old) taking down 27+ year old school records, and seniors Teahna Daniels and Anna McDonald taking down the 200m and 3000m steeplechase records, respectively.
In his first year at the helm of the Longhorn program, Head Coach Edrick Floreal has led the Longhorns to a sweep of the Big 12 Indoor and Outdoor Women's championships, including a pair of top-15 finishes at the NCAA Indoor Championships for both the men's and women's program – a first since 2016. Overall, Texas has secured 14 Big 12 titles with eight coming during the outdoor season.
This will mark the seventh-time (1957, 1974, 1980, 1985, 1992, 2004) Texas has hosted the NCAA Outdoor Championships on the men's side and fourth-occurrence (1985, 1992, 2004) for the women's outdoor national championships. The top finish came for the Longhorn women in 2004 (fourth-place) and 1980 and 1985 (ninth-place) for the men.
