09.13.2019 | Soccer
Texas’ defense hasn’t allowed a goal over its last 255:40 of game action dating back to Sept. 6
AUSTIN, Texas – On Friday night in front of a season-best 1,625 fans (and 15 dogs as part of "Pups at the Pitch" night) at Mike A. Myers Stadium, second-half goals from junior midfielder Haley Berg and senior forward Cyera Hintzen helped lead No. 25 Texas soccer (4-2-0) past Pac-12 stalwart Washington (2-2-2), 2-0.
Key Texas Players
- Berg's goal was both her fourth of the season (tied with Julia Grosso for the team lead) and her fourth over Texas' last three matches. It also served as her first match-winning score of 2019 and the fourth of her career.
- Hintzen picked up her second goal of 2019 and the 24th of her illustrious career. That moved her into a tie for fifth all-time for goals in Texas career history with three-time Longhorns All-American Kasey Moore (2005-08).
- Grosso registered her third assist of the year (on Hintzen's goal), while senior defender Emma Jett picked up her second helper of the season on Berg's match-winner.
Important Notes
- Washington out-shot Texas by a total of 13-11, but the Burnt Orange & White led 5-4 in shots on goal and 9-7 in corner kicks.
- Texas has now won their last 18 non-conference regular-season home matches dating back to Sept. 4, 2016.
- The Longhorns are currently riding their longest winning streak of the season (three matches) and haven't allowed a goal over the last 255:40 of match action dating back to the 14:20 mark at Stephen F. Austin on Sept. 6.
- UT improved to a perfect 3-0 at home this season, has won 13 straight regular-season home contests and hasn't lost a regular-season match at home since a 1-0 (OT) defeat against No. 22 Oklahoma State back on Oct. 27, 2017.
The Details
It was Texas that had the best of the early going as Hintzen started things off by having a shot blocked out for a corner just 1:49 in.
During the fifth minute, it was Berg getting in on the action as her 15-yard effort from the left wing forced a diving stop by Washington keeper Dani Hansen.
The Huskies had a great chance to score against the run of early play at 7:35. Off a Texas foul, UW had a free kick about 30 yards out from frame. Forward Summer Yates stepped up and drove a shot in on net that was tipped up and over the crossbar by Texas keeper Nicole Curry.
The Longhorns continued to apply the pressure as Hintzen fired high at 9:25, while both Hintzen (11:24) and Berg (13:03) had promising shots blocked by the UW backline.
Curry leapt into action again at 20:56 as a Yates effort from the middle of the 18 had to be deflected over the woodwork.
UW slowly began to grow into the match as the first half continued on. The best chance came in the 38th-minute as a free kick from the left wing had to be punched out of danger in a crowd by UT's Curry.
Out of the locker room break, Washington continued its pressure with Ameera Hussen and Yates combining for three off-target shots over the opening 6:16.
It was Hintzen who stole back a little Texas momentum off a quick counter at 51:31. In possession inside the right edge of the 18, the Garland, Texas, product turned quickly and drove a shot right at Hansen for a save.
Texas freshman forward Sydney Nobles nearly found pay dirt at 59:43 as her effort from the right wing had to be saved outside the right post by a diving Hansen.
The breakthrough finally came at the 61:15 mark through a great piece of individual hustle from Berg. Back over midfield in Texas' half, Jett launched a long ball up field into open space. Berg and her marker were one-on-one in a footrace to see who could reach the pass first. Berg won with a final stretch as her quick toe-poke from 18 yards nutmegged the on-rushing keeper and located the lower right corner to make it 1-0.
With UW looking to answer right back, Sianna Siemonsma tried her luck from distance at 66:50, but the ball bounced in for a routine Curry stop.
The Longhorns went on to double their advantage at 77:28 as Grosso began the scoring play with a 15-yard shot off the right post. The ball bounced out to the top of the six where a Washington defender failed to clear it. The ricochet popped straight up in the air near the right post as Hintzen, UT freshman forward Teni Akindoju and a UW defender battled for position. Despite bumping heads with the Huskies player, Hintzen managed to head the ball past Hansen from two yards out to make it 2-0.
The Huskies kept battling over the final minutes by unleashing four shots, one of those on frame at 87:31, but couldn't break up the clean sheet as Texas prevailed.
