Senior forward Cyera Hintzen was unavailable to play in the match for precautionary reasons
AUSTIN, Texas – On Sunday at Mike A. Myers Stadium, Monmouth (2-2-2) scored three goals in a first-half outburst and added another over the last seven minutes to end No. 25 Texas soccer's (4-3-0) three-match winning streak with a 4-0 victory.
Important Notes
- The Longhorns played without the services of two-time All-American forward Cyera Hintzen as the Garland, Texas, native was declared unavailable prior to the match as a precaution after suffering through a rough collision while scoring her Friday night goal against Washington.
- Monmouth led Texas on shots, 12-11, proved efficient in scoring on four of its eight shots on frame (led UT 8-4 in SOG) and held a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks.
- The loss ended Texas' streak of regular-season non-conference home wins at 18, dating back to Sept. 4, 2016. It also broke a 13-match skein as the Longhorns first regular-season home defeat to any opponent at Myers Stadium since Oct. 27, 2017.
- Texas' consecutive scoreless streak ended at a season-long 261:05 (dating back to Sept. 6) after Monmouth's goal just 5:25 into the contest.
The Details
Monmouth brought strong energy right from kick-off as midfielder Jess Johnson bounced a 35-yard effort in on Texas goalkeeper Nicole Curry just 2:09 into the contest.
Back at the other end, Texas junior midfielder Haley Berg got the Horns on the board shot-wise at 3:50 as her effort from the left wing forced a stop at the left post by Monmouth net minder Amanda Knaub.
After threatening several times, the Hawks found the tone-setting early goal at 5:25. Defender Sarina Jones crossed a ball from the left side into the middle of the 18. Despite being marked heavily by a UT defender, forward Dana Scheriff somehow managed a quick toe poke from six yards out to make it 1-0.
Pressing for more, Monmouth doubled its advantage off a quick, 18th-minute counter attack as midfielder Lexie Palladino out-leapt her marker in the middle of the 18 to head a ball just inside the right post.
Texas attempted to raise its energy level in response over the next few minutes as Berg fired high at 19:51, and freshman forward Teni Akindoju missed wide left at 21:13.
The Hawks continued their efficient finishing at 25:40, however, as another cross from the left wing was tapped home from two yards out at the right post by sub A'Liah Moore to make it 3-0.
UT junior midfielder Julia Grosso managed to create some space in the 36th minute, but her effort from the top of the box was blocked away and cleared.
Out of the halftime break, Berg and redshirt junior forward Cydney Billups had shots blocked and go wide at 48:00 and 52:14, respectively.
A beautiful, 53rd-minute Grosso cross from the left wing was nearly finished by Billups, but her quick volley from seven yards out rolled wide right.
Both Texas sophomore midfielder Kailey Smith (62:09) and senior forward Kyra Falcone (77:13) forced saves down the stretch, but the Burnt Orange & White couldn't find a breakthrough.
With time running short and UT pressing up, Monmouth added another as Madie Gibson made a run into space inside the 18 and scored from 10 yards out to finalize the 4-0 scoreline.
