Soccer falls to Providence on “golden goal,” 1-0 (OT)
09.19.2019 | Soccer
The Longhorns out-shot the Friars in the match, 18-7, including 7-1 in shots on goal
AUSTIN, Texas – On Thursday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium, an Elayna Grillakis "golden goal" at the 97:50 mark led Providence (4-3-1) to a 1-0 (OT) victory over Texas soccer (4-4-0).
Important Notes
- The Longhorns were without the services of two-time All-American forward Cyera Hintzen for the second straight contest as the Garland, Texas, native remained unavailable as a precaution after suffering through a rough clash-of-heads/collision while scoring against Washington on Sept. 13.
- Texas led Providence on shots, 18-7, in shots on goal, 7-1, and in corner kicks, 5-2. Friar goalkeeper Shelby Hogan was forced to make seven saves in posting a shutout.
- The loss marked Texas' first in overtime since dropping a 2-1 (OT) decision to Baylor on Nov. 1, 2017, at the Big 12 Championship. UT had gone 2-0-4 over a stretch of six overtime contests since that point until tonight's defeat.
- So far this season, Texas has had freshman or sophomores receive 43-of-88 possible nods (49%) in the starting XI.
The Details
Playing without two-time All-American Hintzen, Texas still managed to bring the energy early on against the Friars.
The best early chance for the Longhorns came off a free kick at 10:18 as junior midfielder Haley Berg stepped up to the ball, just outside the left edge of the 18, and blasted a shot in on frame. Providence keeper Shelby Hogan dove to her right and managed to deflect the ball over the end line for a corner.
Providence got on the board shot-wise at the 11:57 mark as forward Hannah McNulty fired a lengthy shot wide left.
Texas' offensive attack continued over the next few minutes, but couldn't locate the target, as sophomore midfielder Kailey Smith (19:22) and sophomore midfielder Julia Grosso (20:40) fired wide right and high of frame, respectively.
At 25:05, Friar midfielder Katelyn Vieira got into some space at the top of the box, but her effort traveled well over the woodwork. That proved to be Providence's last shot until the 64:35 mark of the contest.
Texas freshman forward Sydney Nobles brought energy out on the left wing during the 27th minute, but her eventual 19-yard shot ventured over the crossbar.
UT junior defender Maddie Dorsett (33:29) and Berg (41:20) each forced Hogan into saves over the remainder of the first half as the teams eventually went to the break, 0-0.
Out of the break, Texas senior forward Kyra Falcone began causing problems. First, she delivered in a 54th-minute cross from the left wing that nearly picked out Berg in the middle of the 18. Secondly, she tried her luck from the left wing but her 15-yard shot was stopped by Hogan.
In the 58th-minute, Berg nearly cracked open the Providence "D" with a through ball up the middle into the 18. Redshirt junior forward Cydney Billups raced to get there, but the pass proved just a bit too well struck as Hogan raced out to corral it.
With Texas still swarming and the Friars content to shoot from distance, the Longhorns had a massive chance to jump in front at 86:40. Berg slipped through the Providence backline and received a pass in clear space entering the 18. About 15 yards out, the Celina, Texas, product launched a shot on frame, but right to Hogan as the keeper popped the ball up briefly before catching it to end the threat.
Providence had one final opportunity with 11 seconds left to steal the match in regulation, but a 28-yard free kick was blasted over the top by McNulty.
Grosso nearly created another moment of individual magic in the 97th minute, possessing a ball just over midfield and racing towards the top of the box. She unleashed a left-footed effort, but Hogan managed a diving stop near the right post.
The end came at the 97:50 mark off an Olivia Lucia throw-in from the left sideline. Midfielder Amber Birchwell controlled the ball and beat a Texas defender towards the end line before passing to the left edge of the six-yard box. Standing eight yards out, Grillakis bent a shot past UT keeper Savannah Madden and into the right side netting to finish the 1-0 win.
