The eight goals were the most for the Longhorns in a match since beating Oklahoma State on Sept. 28, 1997
AUSTIN, Texas – On Sunday afternoon at Mike A. Myers Stadium, Texas soccer (5-4-0) had six different players find the back of the net, led by braces (two goals) from junior midfielder Haley Berg and sophomore midfielder Julia Grosso, in rolling past Grambling (3-6-1), 8-0.
Important Notes
- The eight goals marked the most for Texas in a match since beating Oklahoma State back on Sept. 28, 1997, 8-0.
- Texas' 30 shots in the contest were the most for the Horns since putting up an even 30 during a 7-0 rout of Sam Houston State back Sept. 2, 2016. The Longhorns out-shot Grambling during the match, 30-6, led 16-3 in shots on goal and 7-0 in corner kicks.
- Sunday's occurrence was also the first time six different Longhorns scored in a match since that same 2016 triumph over Sam Houston State.
- Texas scored three goals over a stretch of 2:47 of the first half and three more over a span of 6:35 of the second half.
- Berg and Grosso both recorded braces (two goals) to move them into a tie for the 2019 team lead with six goals each.
- Four Longhorns scored their first goals of the season: redshirt junior Cydney Billups, sophomore forward Mackenzie McFarland, sophomore midfielder Carlee Allen and senior forward Kyra Falcone. Allen's score was also the first of her collegiate career in the Burnt Orange & White.
- Texas sophomore midfielder Kailey Smith registered the first two assists (and two-assist game) of her collegiate career, while freshman forward Sydney Nobles and sophomore defender Emma Regan were each credited with their first assists of the season.
- Redshirt junior goalkeeper Nicole Curry moved into third all-time in the Texas career record books with her 31st win and 20th solo shutout.
- Senior forward Cyera Hintzen missed her third straight game as a result of a collision/clash of heads suffered back on Sept. 13 while scoring against Washington.
The Details
Texas took control of the match against Grambling right from the opening kick-off as Berg forced two early saves by GSU's Rachel Pugh over the opening 3:23.
With the Longhorns offense swarming, the Lady Tigers got on the board shot-wise at 12:57 as forward Michaela Danyo tried her luck from the top of the box only to drive it right into Curry's arms. That would be Grambling's last shot for 23:02 as UT took firm control.
After nine Texas shots and six Pugh saves for GSU, it was Berg that broke the scoreless deadlock at 29:05. The Celina, Texas, native took possession about 40 yards out, beat three defenders to the top of the box and drove home a 20-yard shot into the lower right corner for a 1-0 lead.
That opened the floodgates as the Longhorns went on to score three times over a span of 2:47. It was Grosso who scored the next two in succession as the Vancouver, British Columbia, product created the first with a remarkable individual effort. She took possession 70 yards from goal and weaved her way up field through numerous defenders before driving a 19-yard shot into the lower right corner.
Just 52 seconds later, Grosso drilled another 19-yard shot into the same lower right corner to boost UT's lead to 3-0.
Grambling managed its best spell of offensive pressure over the final few ticks of the opening half. Forward Miranda Urbizu had consecutive shots blocked and go high, respectively, during the 37th-minute, while forward Sydney Devita bounced one into Curry's hands at 39:46.
Out of the halftime break, the woodwork foiled Texas' plans for more as both sophomore defender Cameron Brooks (48:33) and Allen (54:09) rattled shots off the left post.
Berg eventually struck again from 25 yards out at 57:00, completing her brace by locating the lower left corner to make it 4-0.
Just 5:06 later, it was Billups' turn as the forward raced up the right wing before unleashing an 18-yard effort into the twine for a 5-0 advantage.
That again opened the floodgates as McFarland volleyed home a Nobles cross from the top of the six at 65:34, and Allen followed 3:07 later by tucking away a loose ball near the left post for a 7-0 lead.
Falcone decided to get in on the action to finalize UT's eight-goal output with a weaving dash from near the right sideline into the right edge of the 18. The San Antonio, Texas, product eventually blasted a 12-yard drive into the upper 90 at 80:41.
From there, Grambling managed only a last-second blocked shot from Macy Ramsey as the Longhorns finished off the commanding triumph.
