Texas freshman bests the national age-group (17-18) record by more than two seconds and eclipses the school record in his collegiate debut.
AUSTIN, Texas — Freshman Carson Foster set a U.S. national age-group record in the 400-yard individual medley to highlight Friday's opening day of The University of Texas Men's Swimming and Diving First Chance Invitational at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The First Chance Invitational is a non-scored meet featuring competitors from Texas, SMU and Texas A&M.
Foster's time of 3:35.27 in his official collegiate debut eclipsed the previous American record for the 17-18 age group held by Andrew Seliskar (3:37.52) by more than two seconds. The time also set a UT school record in the event, besting the previous mark of 3:36.37 by Will Licon.
Texas earned wins in five of the six individual events on Friday. Sophomore Caspar Corbeau claimed the 100-yard breaststroke (51.96), while senior Sam Pomajevich won the 200-yard butterfly (1:42.93). Junior Daniel Krueger earned the win in the 50-yard freestyle (19.16), and junior Drew Kibler claimed victory in the 500-yard freestyle (4:08.26) – narrowly missing the pool and school record (4:08.19) by Townley Haas.
Meet Highlights
- Senior Alvin Jiang kicked off the meet with a second-place showing in the 100-yard backstroke (45.92), earning an NCAA "B" cut time.
- Sophomore Caspar Corbeau claimed a win in the 100-yard breaststroke (51.96). He easily eclipsed the NCAA "B" cut standard and narrowly missed the NCAA "A" cut (51.67). Junior Charles Scheinfeld placed third (53.32) and also recorded an NCAA "B" cut effort.
- The Longhorns swept the top five spots in the 200-yard butterfly, with all five earning NCAA "B" cut times. Senior Sam Pomajevich earned the victory (1:42.93), while freshman Coby Carrozza placed second (1:43.37). Sophomore Ethan Harder took third (1:43.78) and was followed by junior Andrew Koustik (1:44.15) and sophomore Cole Crane (1:44.28). The NCAA "B" standard is 1:46.69.
- Junior Daniel Krueger posted a win in the 50-yard freestyle (19.16), recording an NCAA "B" cut time. He easily bested the NCAA "B" cut standard and narrowly missed the NCAA "A" cut (18.96). Senior Jake Sannem placed third in the event (20.09).
- Junior Drew Kibler claimed the victory in the 500-yard freestyle (4:08.26), narrowly missing the pool and school record (4:08.19) set by Townley Haas. The time is well below the NCAA "A" cut standard of 4:11.82. Senior JohnThomas Larson placed second (4:15.80) while freshman Matthew Tannenberger took fourth place (4:20.40), and both marks earned NCAA "B" cut times.
- Freshman Carson Foster capped off Friday's action with his phenomenal performance in the 400-yard individual medley (3:35.27), setting a U.S. national age-group (17-18) record and a school record in the event. Sophomore Jake Foster placed third (3:43.30), earning a NCAA "B" cut.
The First Chance Invitational concludes on Saturday, Oct. 17 with action beginning at 11 a.m. CT. Due to health and safety protocols, the meet is closed to the public.
