Freshman pitcher Courtney Day scattered four hits while earning the victory in her first collegiate start
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – On Thursday afternoon at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, No. 6 Texas softball (7-0) was forced to go all seven innings for the first time in 2020, but the end result of a "W" proved the same as the Longhorns shutout California Baptist (2-4) behind freshman pitcher Courtney Day's first career collegiate start, 4-0.
Important Notes
- Not only did Day toss a four-hitter in her first collegiate pitching start, but she also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and a run scored.
- The Longhorns posted five more doubles as a team to give them 25 over their first seven games of the season. The school single-season record for two-baggers was established last season (91).
- Texas currently has six hitters, with at least 10 at-bats this season, that are at .438 or above: Day (.643), senior pitcher/utility Miranda Elish (.643), senior outfielder Kaitlyn Washington (.600), junior second baseman Janae Jefferson (.550), senior outfielder Shannon Rhodes (.538) and sophomore catcher Colleen Sullivan (.438).
- With 82 runs over its first seven games, Texas has scored more runs through the opening seven contests than any team in school history. The old mark was 73 runs by the 2012 Longhorns.
- Texas has now scored at least three runs in an inning on 16 occasions this season.
Major Players
Redshirt senior left fielder Reagan Hathaway (1-for-3, run, double, two RBIs); junior first baseman Lauren Burke (2-for-3, run, two doubles); Jefferson (1-for-4, double, RBI); Sullivan (1-for-2, walk, RBI).
In the Circle
In her initial collegiate start, Day improved to 2-0 overall by scattering four hits, over her first complete-game effort, with no walks and four strikeouts.
The Details
After both teams left a runner stranded in the first, it was the Longhorns that grabbed an early lead during the bottom of the second. Day got the outburst started by driving a one-out double down the left field line before advancing to third on a groundout. With an opportunity for a two-out RBI, Sullivan delivered on a base knock to right center to make it 1-0.
With Day cruising through her first four innings of work to the tune of just two base runners allowed, Texas' offense got back to work in the fourth. The Burnt Orange & White got things rolling with two down as Sullivan walked and Burke followed with a double to right center to station a pair in scoring position. From there, Hathaway ripped a key two-run double down the right field line, and Jefferson followed with a RBI two-bagger down the left field line to boost the UT advantage to 4-0.
In the circle, Day went on to allow a leadoff single in the fifth, a two-out triple in the sixth and a base runner via a UT fielding error in the seventh, but CBU couldn't string anything together against the rookie right hander to break up the shutout.
