Match Notes
Texas-Brown Connection: Brown head coach Lucie (Ludvigova) Schmidhauser was a two-time singles All-American and 1994 Southwest Conference Player of the Year who led the Longhorns to the 1995 NCAA team title during her collegiate playing days. She played her freshman season at Midland Junior College and her sophomore year at NCAA Division II Grand Canyon University prior to transferring to UT. As a junior at Texas, Schmidhauser finished the 1993-94 campaign with a 34-6 overall singles record and helped the Longhorns reach the NCAA semifinals. In her senior year, she led UT to the NCAA title match where the Longhorns topped Florida 5-4 to win its second national team title in three seasons (also won in 1993). Schmidhauser later returned to Texas and served as an assistant coach from 1998-2001. She was inducted into the Longhorn Hall of Honor in 2016.
Team Rankings: Texas is No. 7 in the latest Oracle/ITA Collegiate Division I team national rankings (Feb. 13). UT is No. 8 in the most recent Tennis Channel/USTA Top 25 (Feb. 12).
Individual Rankings: Four UT players are featured in the latest Oracle/ITA national singles rankings (Feb. 5): senior Anna Turati (No. 2), senior Bianca Turati (No. 42), freshman Lexi Ryngler (No. 50) and junior Fernanda Labraña (No. 125).
Last Time Out: The Longhorns posted a 7-0 sweep against Air Force on Thursday (Sept. 13) at the Texas Tennis Center. UT edged the Falcons for the doubles point, as the Turati twins topped the No. 50 pair of TJ Fumagalli and Nadeen Lieberman by a score of 6-4. Texas then won all six singles matches in straight sets.
Doubles Improvement: After struggling for consistency in doubles play last year (UT won just 12 of a possible 23 doubles points), Texas has won 6-of-8 doubles points to start the spring season. The Longhorns are a perfect 6-0 in dual matches when winning the doubles point this year. UT has an overall doubles record of 14-5 (.737) in dual-match play.
Twins in Doubles: Senior twin sisters Anna Turati and Bianca Turati are off to a solid 4-1 start at the No. 1 doubles spot this spring. The Turati twins posted an impressive 6-2 win against Florida State's No. 15 duo of Victoria Allen and Petra Hule (Feb. 7). Two of their four victories have come against ranked opponents. Turati also provided the decisive point in UT's 4-3 win against Ohio State, earning a 6-2, 6-3 victory against No. 8 Shiori Fukuda (Feb. 9).
Bianca Back for One More: Bianca Turati competed solely in professional tournaments during the recent summer and fall schedule. She won a pair of ITF 25k singles titles, earning her first championship in Tarvisio, Italy in the summer on clay courts. Turati concluded her fall season with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win against WTA No. 438 Katie Volynets (USA) to win the 25k pro event on hard courts in Malibu, Calif.
