The Details
The Islanders quickly jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. Designated player Sydney Hoyt stepped into the box and bounced a ball to short for a run-scoring fielding choice.
Texas' offense responded with an immediate answer in the bottom of the first. Hathaway kicked off the outburst by driving a leadoff double off the wall in center. Jefferson came to the dish and blooped a ball that dropped just inside the right field line before spinning wildly out to the right for a triple allowing Hathaway to race home and tie the count at 1-1. After a Shannon Rhodes walk and a failed TAMU-CC fielder's choice play loaded the bases with no outs, Elish continued her red-hot hitting by lacing a two-RBI single through the left side of the infield to grant the Horns a 3-1 advantage.
The Burnt Orange & White continued swinging away in the bottom of the second, putting six more runs up while sending 10 batters to the plate. With the bases loaded and no outs, Rhodes added an RBI single and sophomore catcher Colleen Sullivan walked to force in a run to make it 5-1. The biggest blow of the frame, however, came off Elish's bat as the Crown Point, Ind., native blasted her second career grand slam over the wall in right center to boost the advantage to a commanding 9-1.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi managed to pull one tally back in the third as two walks and a Sydney Hoyt RBI single through the right side cut TAMUCC's deficit to 9-2.
UT's offense continued unabated in the bottom of the third as freshman Alyssa Popelka's RBI base knock and a bases-clearing double from Camille Corona pushed the lead to 13-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Longhorns sent 10 more hitters to the dish in scoring five more times. Consecutive doubles from junior second baseman MK Tedder and junior first baseman Lauren Burke got the attack underway. From there, a London Marder sacrifice fly to left, a Day RBI single and a two-run DerMargosian double finalized the count at 18 runs.
Staked to a massive lead, Day finished off her three frames of relief by tossing a perfect top of the fifth with a strikeout to seal the win.
