THE ALL-TIME SERIES
• Texas holds a 52-17 advantage over Texas Tech in the all-time series between the schools, and has won two of the three matcups held during Tom Herman's tenure.
• The Longhorns bested the Red Raiders, 49-24, on senior day last season.
• Texas holds the longest winning streak by either side (8 games) and the largest margin of victory (51 points) in series history.
CAMPBELL-WILLIAMS FIELD DEDICATION
• At the request of the Jamail family, Joe Jamail Field has been renamed in honor of Longhorn Legends and Heisman Trophy winners Earl Campbell (1974-77) and Ricky Williams (1995-98).
• Campbell, the famed "Tyler Rose," holds a special place in The University of Texas and state of Texas' football history. As a senior at UT in 1977, Campbell became the first Longhorn to win the Heisman Trophy after he rushed for 1,744 yards – a Southwest Conference record that stood for 16 years – and 19 touchdowns. He led the nation in rushing and scoring, and posted a pair of 200-yard games on the road against Texas A&M (222 yards) and SMU (213 yards). Campbell also set a Texas record for 100-yard rushing games that season (10).
• Williams, a San Diego native, completed his UT career with 21 NCAA and 46 school records under his name en route to becoming Texas' second Heisman Trophy winner in 1998. He was a three-time first-team all-conference pick, a two-time Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and only the second player to twice win the Doak Walker Award (nation's top running back). Williams' career culminated in his final home game, on the field now named in his honor, when he surpassed Tony Dorsett's 22-year-old NCAA rushing record.
• The field at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium was originally named after Joe Jamail in 1997 to honor the lifelong Longhorn's immense contributions to The University of Texas' athletic department.
WHAT RETURNS IN 2020
• In 2020, the Longhorns return QB Sam Ehlinger, who has started all 27 games for Texas over the past two seasons. Ehlinger threw for 3,663 of UT's 3,761 passing yards in 2019, and was responsible for 39 of the Longhorns' 58 touchdowns last season.
• The top four rushers from a season ago return in RBs Keaontay Ingram, Roschon Johnson and Daniel Young, as well as Ehlinger, however Young has elected not to play this season. Ingram (853 yds), Ehlinger (663 yds) and Johnson (649 yds) all ran for 600-plus yards last season.
• Out wide, WRs Collin Johnson and Devin Duvernay are both gone to the NFL, leaving junior Brennan Eagles and sophomore Jake Smith as UT's top-two returning receivers. Eagles caught 32 passes for 522 yards (team-high 16.3 ypc) and six touchdowns, while Smith hauled in 25 passes for 274 yards and six touchdowns as a true freshman. Smith's six touchdown catches in 2019 were the second-most by a freshman in school history, trailing only Roy Williams' eight-TD mark in 2000.
• In total, Texas returns 99.6% of its passing yards (3,747), 98.3% of its rushing yards (2,256) and 46.4% of its receiving yards (1,745) from last year's team.
• On defense, the Longhorns bring back nine of their top-11 tacklers, including team-leader Joseph Ossai, who logged 90 tackles in 2019.
• 10 players who recorded at least one sack a season ago are back in 2019, while seven who intercepted at least one pass return to the Forty Acres this year.
NOTABLE STREAKS AND TRENDS
• Texas is 9-4 in non-conference games, including bowl games, under head coach Tom Herman. That includes a 5-2 mark at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
• The Longhorns have held their last six opponents under 25 points, UT's longest stretch since a six-game stretch that covered the end of the 2010 season and the beginning of the 2011 campaign.
• Texas is 11-2 at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium since the start of the 2018 season and 14-5 overall during Herman's tenure as head coach.
• The Longhorns are 10-6 in one-possession games (decided by eight points or less) since the start of 2018.
• UT has won 21 of the 22 games it has outgained its opponent under Tom Herman.
• The Longhorns are 21-2 under Herman when outrushing their opponents, and have won 15 of the last 17 instances.
• Texas' defense has forced at least one turnover in 33 of 41 games under Herman, including in 16 of its last 19 contests.
• UT is 24-3 when leading at halftime since the start of the 2017 season.
• The Longhorns have won 15 of 16 games when holding their opponents under 20 points during Herman's tenure.
• Tom Herman's Texas teams are 9-0 when forcing at least three turnovers and are 19-6 when turning the ball over fewer than three times.
HEAD COACH TOM HERMAN
• Tom Herman is in his sixth season overall as a head coach with a career record of 48-19 (.716). He is in his fourth season at The University of Texas with a mark of 26-15 (.634).
• Including the 2020 season, Herman has spent 17 of his 23 seasons as a coach in the state of Texas on the collegiate level.
• Herman graduated from Cal Lutheran and received his master's degree in education from The University of Texas.
• He owns a career mark of 14-9 against top-25 opponents, 5-6 against top-10 foes and 3-3 versus teams ranked in the top five.
