No. 1 Men’s Swimming and Diving grabs lead after day one at NCAA Championships

The Longhorns claim the title in the 800 free relay on Wednesday’s opening night.
GREENSBORO, N.C. — The No. 1 University of Texas Men's Swimming and Diving team captured the 800-yard freestyle relay to hold the lead after Wednesday's opening night of the four-day NCAA Championship meet at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. UT's quartet of junior Drew Kibler, senior Austin Katz, freshman Carson Foster and senior Jake Sannem registered a time of 6:07.25 in the lone event contested on Wednesday.
Kibler opened the relay with an impressive effort of 1:30.65 in his leadoff leg, while Katz followed with a split of 1:33.02. Foster registered a 1:31.55 on his third leg to give Texas a narrow lead, and Sannem sealed the win with a split of 1:32.03. The mark set a Greensboro Aquatic Center pool record, topping the previous time of 6:11.84 by Louisville in 2019. California placed second in a time of 6:08.68, and Texas A&M took third (6:10.79).
Texas enters day two in first place in the team standings with 40 points, just ahead of California (34), Texas A&M (32) and Florida (30). Thursday's action will feature competition in the 200-yard freestyle relay, 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle, 1-meter diving and 400-yard medley relay.
The Longhorns continue competition at the NCAA Championships on Thursday, March 25 through Saturday, March 27 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Prelims start at 9 a.m. CT, and the finals sessions are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. CT on each day. All prelim and finals sessions will be streamed live on ESPN3.
