The senior jumper took an early world lead and broke a 33-year-old school record in the triple jump last weekend.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Track and Field senior jumper O'Brien Wasome was named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) Men's Outdoor National Athlete of the Week on Tuesday. It is the first time in the award's history that a male student-athlete from UT has been named the National Athlete of the Week during the Outdoor season.
Wasome, a Central Village, Jamaica native, broke Texas' 33-year-old school record in the triple jump this past weekend at the Longhorn Invitational with a jump of 17.05m/55-11.25 (+0.5). His mark also gave him early possession of the world lead this season. Wasome is one of only two Big 12 men to jump at least 17 meters outdoors since 2011 according to the TFRRS Outdoor Performance Lists. His showing at the Longhorn Invitational snapped a 372-day absence from competition for Wasome, who swept the horitzonal jumps titles at the 2020 Big 12 Indoor Championships in his last outing prior to Saturday.
Entering the 2021 Outdoor season, Wasome has earned eight All-America honors, three Big 12 titles and one individual NCAA title (2018 Indoor Triple Jump). He now holds both the indoor and outdoor triple jump school records at Texas.
