Redshirt junior right fielder Taylor Ellsworth blasted her sixth HR of the season in the loss
AUSTIN, Texas – On Saturday afternoon under threatening skies at Red & Charline McCombs Field, No. 7/12 Texas softball (35-8, 9-5 Big 12 Conference) got the sixth HR of the season from redshirt junior right fielder Taylor Ellsworth but dropped game two of its league series against No. 11/9 Oklahoma State (38-6, 13-1 Big 12 Conference), 5-1.
Important Notes
- Ellsworth's HR was the 70th of the season for Texas, tying the 2011 Longhorns for the second-most HR's in a single season in program history.
- With 70 HR's through 43 games, Texas remains ahead of the pace set by the 2010 Longhorns (64 HR's in 43 games) while setting the program single-season HR record of 88 HR's.
- The Longhorns still lead their series over Oklahoma State by a total of 35-24, including 19-11 in Austin.
Major Players
Redshirt junior right fielder Taylor Ellsworth (2-for-3, run, HR, RBI); sophomore first baseman Colleen Sullivan (0-for-1, two walks)
In the Circle
Freshman Courtney Day (4-1) suffered the first loss of her collegiate career after allowing two earned runs on four hits with three walks over 3.0 innings. Freshman Ryleigh White was solid in relief, permitting one earned run on three hits with a walk and two K's in 3.1 frames, while graduate transfer Molly Jacobsen struck out one over a perfect two-thirds of an inning.
The Details
Oklahoma State left a total of three runners stranded over the opening two innings before finally breaking through in the top of the third. A Texas fielding error started things off as two fielder's choice plays, a walk and a wild pitch combined to grant the Cowgirls an unearned, 1-0 lead.
Ellsworth quickly tied things up at 1-1 starting the bottom of the third as the Georgetown, Texas, product launched her sixth HR of the season out to right center.
OSU answered right back with three runs in the fourth. Following another UT fielding miscue to open the frame, back-to-back doubles, a hit batter and a bases loaded walk combined to boost the Cowgirls to a 4-1 advantage.
Texas missed a huge scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore shortstop McKenzie Parker and sophomore first baseman Colleen Sullivan walked to open the frame against Oklahoma State starter Kelly Maxwell. Unfortunately for the Horns, a fielder's choice play that cut down the lead runner at third, a foul out to catcher and a swinging strikeout left two runners stranded.
Trailing 5-1 after Sydney Pennington's leadoff solo HR in the seventh, the Longhorns got two more runners on with one out on a Sullivan walk and an Ellsworth single of the wall in left. Maxwell quickly battled her way out of the brewing jam, however, with back-to-back strikeouts to end the contest.
