05.21.2021 | Women's Golf
Kaitlyn Papp is second after a two-under-par 70 performance in the first round.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The No. 18 Women's Golf team is in the lead after the first round of the 2021 NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club on Friday. Kaitlyn Papp is in second place individually after firing a 2-under-par 70, one stroke behind the leader.
Texas recorded a 1-over 289 as a team to establish a one-stroke lead over Oregon's 2-over-par 290. Stanford is in third after carding a 3-over-par 291, while Wake Forest, Duke, Kent State and Arizona each registered scores of 4-over 292 and are tied for fourth.
Papp made par on the first four holes before recording a bogey on the fifth hole, one of only two she would have on the day. The senior, who finished with a Longhorn-high four birdies, bounced back with consecutive birdies on the seventh and eighth holes to move under par. Papp added birdies on the 11th and 14th, while carding a second bogey on the 13th holes.
Agathe Laisne finished her first round with an even-par 72 and is tied for fifth. Laisne opened her round with a birdie on the first hole then made par on the next four. After a bogey on the sixth hole, she birdied the seventh. She made par the next four holes and had a birdie on 12 to move to 2-under-par, but bogeys on the 14th and 18th holes put her at even-par for the day.
Sophie Guo was 1-over 73 for the day and is tied for 19th after the first round of play. Guo shot even-par or better for the first eight holes, collecting birdies on the fourth and seventh to open the round at 2-under-par, but bogeys on four of the next 10 holes pushed her to 2-over before carding a birdie on 18 to close out her day.
Sara Kouskova is tied for 38th after finishing her round at 2-over 74 with birdies on the second and ninth holes while making par on 12 holes.
Rounding out the Longhorn five, Ashley Park registered an 8-over 80 with a birdie on the seventh hole and 10 pars.
Friday's round was the first of three rounds of stroke play in which all 24 teams will participate. The field will be cut to the top-15 teams for a fourth round of stroke play on Monday. The top-eight teams after 72 holes of stroke play will compete in a match-play format for the NCAA Championship beginning on Tuesday.
Texas is scheduled to tee off in the second round of the NCAA Championship with No. 13 Kent State and No. 20 Maryland at 1:30 p.m. CT on Saturday. Live results will be available throughout the day on Golfstat.com.
