No. 2 Baseball drops Big 12 Championship opener

The Longhorns were knocked off, 5-1, by West Virginia in the first game of the conference tournament.
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – No. 2 Texas Baseball dropped its opener in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship, 5-1, to West Virginia on Wednesday at Bricktown Ballpark.
The Longhorns will play to keep their tournament run alive on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. against the loser of the Oklahoma State vs. Oklahoma matchup.
Ty Madden pitched 6.2 innings and allowed three runs on three hits and two walks. He struck out five batters but took the loss in the game.
West Virginia took an early 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the top of the second inning. The Mountaineers made it 3-0 in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to right field and a two-out wild pitch.
Texas got a run on the board in the sixth inning when Eric Kennedy hit an opposite field solo homer to left field. The solo shot was one of six hits by the Longhorns in the game.
Cole Quintanilla was called on out of the bullpen in the seventh and got the Longhorns out of a jam. Tanner Witt did the same in the eighth, getting a pair of strikeouts to end a jam.
Texas had a great scoring opportunity in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs but the Longhorns were unable to scratch out a run.
The Mountaineers added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth to put the game away.
