The Longhorns brought the potential tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh
STILLWATER, Okla. – On Sunday afternoon in the third game of the NCAA Stillwater Super Regional at Cowgirl Stadium, No. 12-national seed Texas softball (43-14) brought the potential tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh before coming up just short of a WCWS berth with a 2-0 loss to No. 5-national seed Oklahoma State (47-10).
Important Notes
- The 2021 Longhorns offense was numerically the best in school history, finishing first in the program single-season record book in team batting average (.342), slugging (.561) and on-base percentage (.419), second in runs scored (366), HR's (78), total bases (839) and RBIs (339) and tied for fourth in doubles (79).
- Junior second baseman Janae Jefferson finished off the NCAA Tournament with a remarkable .524 batting average (11-for-21) over seven games with two doubles and four RBIs.
- Freshman outfielder Jordyn Whitaker hit at a .556 clip (5-for-9) with a HR and two RBIs over her first NCAA Tournament experience.
- Texas is now 9-6 all-time in NCAA Super Regional play, including 2-4 in road contests.
- In three seasons as the helm of the Longhorns, head coach Mike White is 113-34 (.769) with two NCAA Super Regional berths.
Major Players
Junior catcher Mary Iakopo (1-for-3, double); freshman right fielder Jordyn Whitaker (1-for-3); sophomore shortstop McKenzie Parker (1-for-3); freshman third baseman Camille Corona (1-for-2)
In the Circle
Sophomore Shea O'Leary (16-6) suffered a tough loss after allowing two earned runs on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts over a complete-game effort.
The Details
Texas strung together a two-out scoring chance in the top of the second as Iakopo reached on an error at third and Parker followed with a single through the left side. Unfortunately, the Longhorns missed a huge chance for an early run as a sharp bouncer to third was handled to leave the duo stranded.
The Burnt Orange & White wasted another big opportunity in the top of the third, putting runners on the corners with two outs on a Jefferson walk and a Whitaker base knock off the wall in left. Once again, Oklahoma State starter Carrie Eberle and the Cowgirls escaped the jam as another bouncer to third was handled to raise Texas' left stranded count to four.
After allowing just two base runners through her opening four innings of work, O'Leary ran into some trouble in the bottom of the fifth. Third baseman Sydney Pennington and second baseman Karli Petty were each hit by pitches to start the frame. Following a sac bunt to move the duo into scoring position, designated player Avery Hobson slapped a single up the middle past a drawn-in Texas infield for a RBI. Left fielder Chelsea Alexander immediately followed by beating out a bunt single to plate another for a 2-0 lead.
With Texas down to its final three outs, Iakopo gave the Longhorns some life in the top of the seventh by ripping a one-out double past short and into the left center gap. UT brought the potential tying run to the plate two different times, but a groundout and a fly ball to left ended the contest.
