AUSTIN, Texas – No. 2 Baseball defeated Southern, 11-0, in the opening game of the NCAA Austin Regional at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Friday afternoon. Texas will face the winner of this evening's Arizona State-Fairfield game on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT.
Tristan Stevens was dominant on the hill for Texas, throwing seven innings of shutout ball, allowing four hits while striking out six batters to earn his 10th win of the season.
Zach Zubia paced the Longhorn offense, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Cam Williams and Silas Ardoin each had two hits and two RBI.
Texas (43-15) got rolling in the first, plating a pair of runs to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. Mike Antico led off the frame with a walk then stole second, moving to third after an error on the throw. Zubia brought him home with a deep sacrifice fly to right to open the scoring. Ivan Melendez followed with a monster home run onto Comal Street beyond left field.
The Longhorns broke the game open in the second, scoring four times to make it 6-0. With one out, Trey Faltine and Ardoin drew back-to-back walks and after a fielder's choice put runners on the corners, Antico was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mitchell Daly followed with a double to right-center to score two runs, then Zubia doubled through the right side to bring home two more.
Texas played small ball in the third inning to add another run and extend the lead to 7-0. Williams opened the inning with a base hit to left field and would move to third after Douglas Hodo III and Faltine each dropped down bunt singles to load the bases. A ground ball to shortstop allowed Williams to come home with the seventh run of the game.
A two-run seventh inning pushed the Texas advantage to 9-0. Hodo started things off with a one-out single to left, then advanced to second when Faltine was hit by a pitch. Ardoin brought both runners home with a double to right-center.
Williams made it 11-0 in the eighth with a two-run shot to left field for his 10th home run of the season. Melendez started the inning with a single to right field and after a pitching change, Williams hammered the first pitch he saw beyond the Southern bullpen in left.
Palmer Wenzel pitched a scoreless eighth, while Jared Southard closed out the game with a scoreless ninth.
